    Abstract: A method and system for determining a photon statistics of a light source using an unbalanced beam-splitter is disclosed. The method includes collecting data for photon counts for a first output path and a second output path by a first detector and a second detector, respectively, for a first time period, a first power level, and a first characteristic and collecting data for photon counts for the first output path and the second output path by the first detector and the second detector, respectively, for a second time period, a second power level, and a second characteristic; and processing outputs of the first and the second detector to determine the photon statistics.

    Abstract: A method of resolving a number of photons received by a photon detector includes optically coupling a waveguide to a superconducting wire having alternating narrow and wide portions; electrically coupling the superconducting wire to a current source; and electrically coupling an electrical contact in parallel with the superconducting wire. The electrical contact has a resistance less than a resistance of the superconducting wire while at least one narrow portion of the superconducting wire is in a non-superconducting state. The method includes providing to the superconducting wire, from the current source, a current configured to maintain the superconducting wire in a superconducting state in the absence of incident photons; receiving one or more photons via the waveguide; measuring an electrical property of the superconducting wire, proportional to a number of photons incident on the superconducting wire; and determining the number of received photons based on the electrical property.

    Abstract: A device for determining a focal position of a laser beam, in particular a processing laser beam in a laser processing head, has an optical decoupling element for decoupling a partial beam from a beam path of the laser beam, a detector for detecting at least one beam parameter of the partial beam, and at least one optical element with an adjustable focal length, which is arranged in a region of the beam path of the partial beam between the optical decoupling element and the detector. Also disclosed is a laser processing head which includes a device of this type, as well as a method for determining a focal position of a laser beam.

    Abstract: A detection system includes a photodetector, a spatial light modulator (SLM) device optically coupled to the photodetector, and a controller. The controller is operatively connected to the SLM device and is disposed in communication with the photodetector and a memory. The memory has instructions recorded on the memory that cause the controller to communicate a SLM pattern sequence to the SLM device, modulate illumination incident on the SLM device according to the SLM pattern sequence to generate an illumination pulse sequence, and receive an intensity-time profile from the photodetector corresponding to the SLM pattern sequence. The instructions also cause the controller to signal, with spatial specificity, presence of flame or gas when the intensity-time profile indicates that flame or gas is present within a field of view of the detection system. Detection methods and computer program products are also described.
