The pair of photodiodes is arranged such that a spot of the focus error detecting beam moves, due to temperature changes, in a range essentially limited to the parting portion therebetween. Thus, a semiconductor laser device and an optical pickup apparatus suppressing focus errors due to temperature changes and preventing reduction in signal strength can be obtained.

The invention provides a focus search apparatus and a focus search method by which damage to an objective lens of an optical pickup or an optical recording medium upon a focus search can be prevented at a low cost. The optical pickup is driven in a focusing direction with a gradually increasing amplitude, and the driving is stopped when the optical pickup reaches a range within which focus servoing is possible. Since the amplitude of the driving exhibits a gradual increase, even if the optical pickup is driven over several periods in an initial stage of the focus search, the amplitude of the driving then is still small. Since the optical pickup has a number of opportunities in which it can reach the range within which focus servoing is possible equal to the number of periods, the possibility that the optical pickup may collide with the optical recording medium is low.

An information recording/reproducing apparatus includes a focusing optical system for focusing light from a light source on an information recording medium as a light spot and an error signal generation system for generating an error signal that represents the positional deviation between an information track and the light spot on the information recording medium from the light reflected by the information recording medium. The apparatus further includes a tilt measurement system for measuring the amount of relative inclination between the focusing optical system and the information recording medium and an offset application system for performing off-track of the light spot by applying an electric offset corresponding to the measured amount of inclination to the error signal. Since the electric offset that corresponds to the amount of inclination is added directly to the error signal, the apparatus does not require a complicated algorithm and can improve the recording and reproduction characteristics easily at low cost.

The objective lens actuator includes an actuator base fixed to a carriage movable in the radial direction of an optical disk, a lens holder for holding the objective lens, and a supporting mechanism for elastically supporting the lens holder to the actuator base. The actuator base has an elongated hole extending in the radial direction of the optical disk. A relative position between the actuator base and the carriage is adjusted so that the tilt of the optical axis of the objective lens in the radial direction of the optical disk occurring in displacing the lens holder in the focusing direction is minimized, and thereafter the actuator base is fixed to the carriage by means of screws.

In an optical pickup method and device of the present invention, a grating unit separates a light beam, emitted by a light source, into a 0th order diffracted beam and 1st order diffracted beams. An objective lens focuses the diffracted beams, sent from the grating unit, onto a recording surface of an optical recording medium through a transparent substrate of the medium, so that a main spot is formed on the recording surface by the 0th order diffracted beam and sub-spots, interposing the main spot therebetween, are formed on the recording surface by the 1st order diffracted beams. A reflection beam detector receives reflection beams from the main spot and the sub-spots of the medium to generate detection signals from the received reflection beams. A control unit changes a pattern of the beams incident to the objective lens to correct a spherical aberration due to a deviation of a thickness of the substrate of the medium, and moves the grating unit relative to the light source to cancel shifting of sub-spot positions on the recording surface due to the spherical aberration correction, in order to generate a proper tracking error signal.

An optical head comprises a photodetector 8 having divided photosensitive areas to detect light 13 reflected from an optical disk 7, means 10, 11, 12 for obtaining tracking error signal by operating signals from the photosensitive areas. The photodetector 8 has a first division line 9a parallel to an information track on the optical disk and second and third division lines 9b, 9c perpendicular to the first division line 9f and symmetrical to the optical axis. Further, a light-shielding area 8i is provided for shielding a part of the reflected light between the division lines 9b and 9c. The signals are operated to reduce offset of the tracking error signal due to a shift of object lens and a tilt of the optical disk. Accordingly, the optical head of the present invention has a small offset of tracking error signal with a simple structure.
