A high speed polishing device useful for polishing a large number of miniature components, such as multi-layer electronic components, is disclosed. In various embodiments of the present invention, a vertical planetary ball mill or other barrel polishing device is modified to rotate polishing containers having a modified interior cavity structure. This interior cavity provides a smooth, gradually curved interior sidewall that improves circulation within the container during high-speed vertical polishing rotation. The improved circulation results in polishing for a larger number of components placed within the container and in less time than existing polishing container structures. In further embodiments, the containers are rotated around a generally tilted axis positioned at an angle between entirely vertical and horizontal positions. Rotation about a tilted axis further reduces collisions and increases relative polishing movement within the container.

The method involves the step of first rotating a plurality of tools within an inner vessel at high speed relative to the outer vessel with a first abrasive. The first abrasive is then removed and a second abrasive is added to the vessel. The inner vessel is then rotated, again at high speed, with the second abrasive. The resulting tools have reduced surface anomalies.

An apparatus and method for artificially weathering large amounts of marble by use of a horizontally disposed drum having a stone lined interior surface. The drum houses a large quantity of marble having similar surface hardness together with a slurry of abrasive material including silica, clay, and gravel which operates to cushion the marble from chipping during tumbling of the marble. The stone lining of the drum absorbs the impact of marble to reduce or prevent chipping of the marble. The marble and slurry are rotated at a particular speed for a predetermined amount of time. Various types of acid can also be inserted into the mixture providing a faster processing time and surface etching not possible with straight abrasion techniques. The processed marble is removed from the drum and sliced in half so to provide two pieces of weathered tile each having a flat mounting surface.

When two disk members are rotated together with a revolutionary shaft, a planetary moving mechanism provided in one of the disk members revolves rotary shafts around the revolutionary shaft and rotates the rotary shafts on their axes. Rotary pinching mechanisms installed in the rotary shafts (a part of a barrel pinching mechanism) pinch and rotate airtight cylindrical barrels. Hydraulic cylinders (the remainder of the barrel pinching mechanism) actuate the rotary pinching mechanisms on the side of one of the disk members to release the pinch of the barrels. A barrel handling mechanism 10 carries a released barrel out of the apparatus and set an untreated barrel.

The serrations provide cutting edges along their outer surfaces and recesses therebetween. The metal of the rod is hardened at least in the portion adjacent the surface to provide hardened cutting edges and a wear resistant surface. The abrading elements are conveniently formed by severing rod or wire stock in the desired length and rolling or otherwise forming the desired serrations therein, after which the abrading elements may be hardened.

The barrel is rotated around an exciting coil and is filled with magnetic abrasive powder which is arranged by magnetic flux generated by the exciting coil to form magnetic brush. A work is embedded into the magnetic brush. The work is rotated together with a spindle and the barrel is rotated so that the surface of the work is abrased by the magnetic brush. A bottom magnetic pole, a lateral magnetic pole and an upper magnetic pole are disposed in an inner periphery in the barrel in the proximity to the exciting coil and the strong magnetic brush is locally formed therein. The side portion of the work is located in the local magnetic brush, and the bottom, side and upper surfaces of the work are abrased like a mirror surface.
