An annular gap washing appliance comprises a body 4 formed of two vertically superimposed opposite truncated cones arranged coaxially within a shell 3 which is contracted parallel to the upper truncated cone so as to form with it an annular gap 5, the body 4 being vertically adjustable to vary the width of gap 5. The velocity of flow within gap 5 may thus be kept constant, e.g. at a value of 60-90 metres per second, despite strong fluctuations in the mass flow of the waste gas which may be from a converter. The spray 13 may have an apex angle substantially the same as that of the lower truncated cone. A series of guide vanes 15, generating a vortex, may be superimposed on the shell 3, and be surrounded by a separator shell 16. A series of such appliances may be arranged in a circle around the axis of a gas washing plant so that the gas passes through them in parallel.
