Fibrillatable multicomponent fibers of the matrix segment type and a process for production of fiber structures by splitting shrinkable, basically unset, multi-component fibers consisting of at least two incompatible components which in the fiber cross section are arranged in the form of a matrix and several segments, the latter accounting for about 20% to 80% of the total cross section. After having been processed into fiber structures such as staple fibers, yarns or fabrics, the multicomponent fibers are treated with a liquid or gaseous organic solvent, particularly chlorinated lower alkanes, to partially or completely split the segment filaments from the matrix component. Useful solvents are those which will reduce the zero-shrinkage temperature of the matrix or the segment polymer by at least 160.degree. C. and in which the polymer components constituting the fiber show different shrinkage behavior. Splitting may be further enhanced by the application of mechanical agitation, e.g. by ultrasonic waves. Fabrics made from the multicomponent fibers may be woven, knitted, non-woven, flocked and three-dimensional.

Multi-component mixed filament, wherein at least two spinning materials having poor affinity are mixed and dispersed in unitary filament in a nebular configuration containing at least 50 stars at least in one portion of the cross-section of the filament and the nebular configuration continues substantially in the longitudinal direction of the filament is manufactured by subjecting said spinning materials to at least eight times of "joining and dividing step in different phase" repeatedly to layer-multiply said spinning materials so as to form a nebular configuration in the cross-section of the resulting filament and then extruding the resulting mixture from orifice in a spinneret. In this manufacture, the preferable combinations of said two spinning materials having poor affinity are polyamide-polyester, polyamide-polyalkylne oxide, polyester-polyalkylene oxide and polyamide-polyolefin.

Interfacial surface generating means are disclosed which have an inlet end adapted to receive fluid, and outlet end adapted to discharge fluid, and a plurality of separate passage ways connecting the inlet end and outlet end, the passage ways opening (1) on the inlet end essentially along a first line lying approximately through the center of the inlet end and (2) on the outlet end essentially along a second line lying approximately through the center of the outlet end the second line being essentially normal to the first line. A plurality of the generating means can be used in series to make an interfacial surface generator which will produce many layers within a stream.
