The method includes the steps of: forming a first belt/belt sleeve component with a compression rubber layer; applying a radial force on the first belt/belt sleeve component so as to urge the first belt/belt sleeve component against a mold surface and thereby forming the at least one of the plurality of ribs and plurality of cog teeth in the first belt/belt sleeve component; forming a second belt/belt sleeve component having at least a part of a cushion rubber layer and a load carrying member; and after forming the at least one of the plurality of ribs and plurality of cog teeth on the first belt/belt sleeve component, joining the first and second belt/belt sleeve components to each other.

The present invention is a harmonic belt drive that uniquely combines desirable characteristics of a traditional harmonic drive with those of a traditional belt drive. The harmonic belt drive includes a rigid arcuate toothed member having an internal surface, an external surface, and a row of teeth radially extending from the internal surface and a belt portal extending between the internal surface and external surface. A multi-lobe cam is rotatably mounted concentric within the rigid toothed member and an elongated toothed belt is disposable between the multi-lobe cam and rigid arcuate toothed member. The toothed belt is radially deflectable by the multi-lobe cam meshing an area of belt teeth with an area of arcuate member teeth. The toothed belt advances by a small amount with each revolution of the multi-lobe cam.

A toothed timing belt is produced from a belt blank utilizing an apparatus having a belt blank fixturing device for supporting the belt blank for selective indexable rotation about a first axis and a toothed grinding wheel rotatable about a second transverse axis and supported for movement across the width of the belt blank in a direction parallel to the first axis for cutting a series of circumferentially spaced transverse teeth into the belt blank. The belt blank is indexed with each pass of the grinding wheel until the entire belt has been provided with teeth. The toothed belt blank may then be severed about its periphery to provide a plurality of discrete timing belt members.
