A method of protecting the privacy of a signature that may be used in, for example, a vote by mail system, that includes creating a distorted version of the registration signature, storing the distorted version of the registration signature, and storing a mechanism for converting the distorted registration signature into an undistorted registration signature. The stored mechanism may later be used to reverse the distortion so that the undistorted signature can be used in a verification process.
Abstract:
A system and method to provide identification codes to track outbound mail and corresponding replies. Tracking is enabled where an intended recipient is not determined until after physical components of the mailpiece are assembled. A first ID code is associated with a second ID code on a return envelope. The first ID code is positioned on a front of the return envelope proximal to a return address on the return envelope. The second ID code is positioned on a back of the return envelope proximal to a recipient address region on the return envelope. The return envelope is inserted into a carrier envelope with the front of the return envelope facing the back of the carrier envelope, and the second ID code and the recipient address region being visible through a front window in the front of the carrier envelope. A recipient address is printed in the recipient address region of the reply envelope, through the front window on the carrier envelope. To allow mail piece tracking, the first and second ID codes are associated with the intended recipient of the outbound mail.

Systems and methods for utilizing a known histogram of a particular category of images to constrain a probabilistic print-scan model in order to provide a more accurate print-scan model are described. A probability function is defined that given a two-dimensional grayscale bitmap input image provides the probability that a particular pixel of the input image will have a particular gray level in the output image after print-scan processing. Additionally, an expected target histogram is input into the system and used to constrain or modify the probabilistic print-scan model for the input image to produce a deterministic print-scan model.

A voting system includes one or more voting machines provided at a specific location, wherein for each authorized voter one of the voting machines is adapted to record a first set of voting selections, and one or more validation machines provided at the specific location, wherein for each authorized voter one of the validation machines is adapted to present the first set of voting selections to the authorized voter and record a second set of voting selections only if the first set of voting selections is confirmed. A first vote tally is determined from the first set of voting selections of each authorized voter, and a second vote tally is determined from the second set of voting selections of each authorized voter. The first vote tally is then compared to the second vote tally, wherein a vote modification may have occurred if the tallies do not match.

An envelope that allows a mailer to partly seal an envelop such that the primary content is sealed within the envelope while still allowing a third party to insert secondary material into the envelope is provided. An envelope includes a first sheet and a second sheet that forms a first pouch between the second sheet and the first sheet. The first pouch has a top opening and a side opening. The envelope also includes a third sheet that forms a second pouch between the third sheet and the second sheet. The second pouch has a top opening. The envelope also has a first flap for closing both the top opening of the first pouch and the top opening of the second pouch. The envelope also includes a second flap for closing the side opening of the first pouch.

A vote-by-mail return envelope that includes a pouch portion for containing the ballot and a stub portion on which the voter applies his/her signature and method for processing are provided. Each portion of the envelope contains a respective barcode that identifies the respective portion. When the envelope is received at the vote-counting location, the stub is separated from the pouch, thereby separating the voter's signature, name, etc. from the ballot. The signature is then verified from the stub, and subsequent processing of the pouch uses the pouch barcode identifier as a link to the stub barcode identifier and/or to the result of the signature verification, to determine whether the ballot in the pouch is eligible for counting or whether some remedial procedure is necessary.

The present invention is concerned with inclusion of a “fragile watermark” in an original printed document to aid in a determination whether a document under examination is an original or a copy. The watermark may be applied by making small tonal adjustments on a pixel block by pixel block basis in data used to generate the original document. Documents to be verified may then be examined on a block-by-block basis after scanning.
Abstract:
Methods and systems that prevent completion of postdated financial transactions until the specified future date is provided. A portion of the information necessary to complete a financial transaction is encrypted utilizing an identity-based encryption (IBE) scheme. The encryption key used to encrypt the information is associated with the date on which the transaction is authorized to be completed. The encrypted information is provided to the payee. The issuing bank provides a daily decryption key that allows decryption of information encrypted using the key associated with the corresponding date. Thus, only when the maturity date of the transaction has arrived will the payee or depositing bank be able to obtain the decryption key that will decrypt the encrypted information necessary to complete the transaction. Since the encrypted information can not be decrypted until the date associated with the encryption key, the financial transaction can not be completed until such date.

A vote-by-mail return envelope includes a pouch for receiving a ballot. The pouch is formed from a front sheet and a rear sheet. A signature space is provided to be signed by the voter. The envelope also includes an adhesion region at which the front sheet is adhered to the rear sheet to define a boundary of the pouch. The adhesion region separates the signature space from the pouch. Further, the envelope includes a flap to be attached to at least one of the rear sheet and the front sheet to cover the signature space. The signature space may be on the flap, the rear sheet or front sheet.
