    Abstract: A carrier-phase recovery method includes: (i) applying a first carrier-phase recovery algorithm to complex-valued symbols of a signal received by a product detector, yielding coarse phase-estimates, the signal being modulated per an M-QAM scheme; (ii) modelling the coarse phase-estimates as a weighted sum of M probability-density functions of an M-component mixture model; (iii) optimizing the M probability-density functions with an expectation-maximization algorithm to yield M optimized probability-density functions; (iv) mapping, based on the M optimized probability-density functions, the coarse phase-estimates to one of M symbols corresponding to the QAM scheme, each coarse phase-estimate mapped to a same symbol belonging to a same one of M clusters; (v) applying a second carrier-phase recovery algorithm to each of the M clusters to generate refined phase-estimates each corresponding to a respective coarse phase-estimate; and (vi) mapping, based on the M optimized probability-density functions, each refined phase-estimate to one of the M symbols.

    Abstract: An optical network communication system includes an optical hub, an optical distribution center, at least one fiber segment, and at least two end users. The optical hub includes an intelligent configuration unit configured to monitor and multiplex at least two different optical signals into a single multiplexed heterogeneous signal. The optical distribution center is configured to individually separate the at least two different optical signals from the multiplexed heterogeneous signal. The at least one fiber segment connects the optical hub and the optical distribution center, and is configured to receive the multiplexed heterogeneous signal from the optical hub and distribute the multiplexed heterogeneous signal to the optical distribution center. The at least two end users each include a downstream receiver configured to receive one of the respective separated optical signals from the optical distribution center.

    Abstract: A system for monitoring the status of digital certificates is provided. The system includes a responder computer device. The responder computer device is programmed to store, in a database, a plurality of statuses associated with a plurality of digital certificates. The responder computer device is also programmed to receive, from a first computer device, a request message including an identifier of a target certificate. The responder computer device is further programmed to query the database to retrieve status information about the target certificate. In addition, the responder computer device is programmed to generate a response message based on the retrieved status information. Moreover, the responder computer device is programmed to transmit the response message to the first computer device.

    Abstract: A method for predicting network-traffic bursts includes identifying, in data received by a networking device, a plurality of network-traffic bursts, each of the plurality of network-traffic bursts occurring at a respective one of plurality of burst-times {tN, tN−1, . . . , t0}. The method includes determining a time-interval τn of a next burst occurring at τn after burst-time t1 by determining respective values of τn, a parameter ξ, and a parameter η, that minimize, to within a tolerance, a quantity (ƒk(ξ,η,k)−(τn−tk)) for at least three values of a integer k. Parameters ξ and η are, respectively, a real and imaginary part of a power-law exponent of a power law relating predicted time-interval τn to any of the plurality of burst-times. The method includes determining, from a cumulative distribution function of a normal distribution of previously-identified network-traffic bursts, a time-duration during which the networking device may reallocate bandwidth.

    Abstract: A wireless communication node includes a receiving portion configured to detect, over a wireless communication channel, a request to send (RTS) message from a transmitting station within a communication vicinity of the wireless communication node. The RTS message includes at least one duration field. The wireless communication node further includes a processor configured to (i) calculate an estimated time parameter, (ii) add the estimated time parameter to a current timestamp of the wireless communication node, and (iii) form a control packet from the RTS message, the at least one duration field, and the estimated time parameter. The wireless communication node further includes a transmitting portion configured to transmit over the wireless communication channel (i) a clear to send (CTS) message the transmitting station, and (ii) the control packet to a modem in operable communication with the wireless communication channel.

    Abstract: A method for transmitting a digital frame by an optical network unit in a digital communications network includes steps of arranging received data into a series of symbols, installing a primary cyclic prefix immediately preceding the series of symbols in time, and inserting individual ones of a plurality of secondary cyclic prefixes between each adjacent pair of symbols in the series of symbols. A length of each secondary cyclic prefix corresponds to a first duration shorter than an amount of time needed to turn on a laser of the optical network unit. The method further includes a step of providing to the optical network unit the digital frame. The digital frame includes the primary cyclic prefix, the plurality of secondary cyclic prefixes, and the series of symbols. The method further includes a step of modulating the provided digital frame by a laser of the optical network unit.

    Abstract: A server is provided for managing access of an electronic entity to a communications network. The server includes a contact point in operable communication with the electronic entity. The contact point is configured to receive a network access granting request message from the electronic entity. The server further includes a processing module, configured to process the received network access granting request message, validate trust indicators contained within the network access granting request message, authorize access of the electronic entity to the network upon validation of the trust indicators, and transmit a response message to the electronic entity indicating a level of access to the network that has been authorized.
