Abstract: A bipolar battery cell includes a stack including N current collectors, M anode electrodes, S separators, and C cathode electrodes, where N, M, S and C are integers greater than one. A first positioning member is arranged on one side of the stack and includes a first planar portion and a first slot in the first planar portion. A first one of the C current collectors extends through the first slot in the first planar portion and is folded. The first positioning member further includes a first rail portion and a second rail portion. The first rail portion and the second rail portion extend from the first planar portion. A first external tab is arranged between the first rail portion and the second rail portion and connected to the first one of the C current collectors.

Abstract: A battery system includes a battery cell, which includes an anode including a first current collector and an anode layer disposed on the first collector and including an anode active material. The cell includes a cathode including a second current collector and a cathode layer disposed on the second collector and including a cathode active material. The cell includes a solid-state electrolyte including one of a reduction tolerable solid electrolyte disposed in contact with the anode and an oxidation tolerable solid electrolyte disposed in contact with the cathode. The reduction tolerable solid electrolyte is present in an amount of from 0.1 part by weight to 5 parts by weight based upon 100 parts by weight of the anode layer. The oxidation tolerable solid electrolyte is present in an amount of from 1 part by weight to 10 parts by weight based upon 100 parts by weight of the cathode layer.

Abstract: Composite reference electrode substrates and relating methods are provided. The composite reference electrode substrate includes a separator portion and a current collector portion adjacent to the separator portion. A method for forming the reference electrode substrate includes anodizing one or more surfaces of a first side of an aluminum foil so as to form a porous separator portion disposed adjacent to a porous current collector portion. The porous separator portion includes aluminum oxide, and the current collector portion includes the aluminum foil. The separator portion and the current collector portion each have a porosity of greater than or equal to about 10 vol. % to less than or equal to about 80 vol. %.

Abstract: A reference electrode for a lithium-ion battery cell in the form of a porous ultrathin film that is fabricated from aluminum or an aluminum alloy is described. The aluminum layer is conductive and functions as a current collector for the reference electrode. The alloying elements may include but not limited to one or more of copper, zinc, silver, gold, titanium, chrome, rare earth metals, etc., to achieve target values for electrical, mechanical and chemical properties. Also disclosed is an electrochemical battery cell having an anode, a cathode, and a reference electrode, wherein the reference electrode is interposed between the anode and the cathode, wherein the reference electrode is an electrode layer that is arranged on a current collector, and wherein the current collector is fabricated from an aluminum alloy.

Abstract: A sensor assembly includes a sensor and a cover disposed adjacent to the sensor to protect the sensor. The cover has an inner cover surface and an outer cover surface opposite the inner cover surface. The inner cover surface faces the sensor, and the outer cover surface faces away from the sensor. The cover has a first end wall and a second end wall apart from the first end wall along a first direction. The sensor assembly includes a cleaning system having a wiper movable along the outer cover surface of the cover in the first direction to clean to the outer cover surface. The wiper is at least partly made of a wiper material, and the wiper material includes a hydrophilic material to facilitate removal of water from the outer cover surface of the cover.

Abstract: A solid-state battery cell having a capacitor interlayer is disclosed. The solid-state battery includes an anode, a cathode spaced from the anode, a solid-state electrolyte layer disposed between the anode and the cathode, and a capacitor assisted interlayer sandwiched between at least one of (i) the anode and solid-state electrolyte layer, and (ii) the cathode and the solid-state electrolyte layer. The capacitor assisted interlayer comprise at least one of a polymer-based material, an inorganic material, and a polymer-inorganic hybrid material; and a capacitor anode active material or a capacitor cathode active material. The polymer-based material includes at least one of a poly(ethylene glycol) methylether acrylate with Al2O3 and LiTFSI, a polyethylene oxide (PEO) with LiTFSI, and a poly(vinylidene fluoride) copolymer with hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP)-based gel electrolyte. The inorganic material includes a 70% Li2S-29% P2S5-1% P2O5. The polymer-inorganic hybrid material includes a mixture of PEO, LiTFSI, and 75% Li2S-24% P2S5-1% P2O5 (LPOS).

Abstract: An improved substrate surface texture i.e., roughness, significantly improves the adhesion of thermal spray coatings. The surface texture is defined by two metrology parameters and the invention comprehends a range of average roughness (Sa) between 9 and 15 μm and developed interfacial area ratio (Sdr) of greater than 100%. This surface texture is achieved by methods such as water jet erosion, mechanical roughening, laser texturing, chemical etching and plasma etching. The surface texture is especially beneficial for walls of cylinders of internal combustion engines, hydraulic cylinders and similar components to which a thermal spray coating is adhered and which are exposed to sliding or frictional wear.
