    摘要: Disclosed is a perfluoropolyether (PFPE) lubricant comprising less than about 10 percent PFPE molecules having a molecular weight lower than about 2000 Daltons, and wherein the average molecular weight of the lubricant is greater than about 5000 Daltons. Such a lubricant comprises less than about 15 percent PFPE molecules having a moleuclar weight greater than about 10,000 Daltons. Also disclosed is a thin film magnetic disc comprising a recording surface and a PFPE lubricant in contact with the recording surface. The recording surface of such a thin film magnetic disc can be adapted to magnetically record information via an air bearing read/write head. The recording surface can be smooth. The disc can further comprise a rough-surfaced landing zone inward of the recording surface, wherein the PFPE lubricant is in contact with the landing zone. Also disclosed is a method of lubricating a thin film magnetic disc. The method can comprise applying a narrow, high molecular weight fractionated PFPE lubricant to the disc. In addition, a method of preparing a PFPE lubricant for use with a thin film magnetic disc is disclosed. The method can comprise fractionating a PFPE lubricant to include less than about 10 percent PFPE molecules having a molecular weight lower than about 2000 Daltons. The average molecular weight of such a lubricant after fractionation is greater than about 5000 Daltons.

    摘要: A method and system for cleaning and/or burnishing an article. The article is operated on by a burnishing object having one more cutting edges and one or more heating surfaces. The article rotates relative to the burnishing head and the cutting edges remove asperities from the article. The heating surface can be activated and can optionally protrude from the burnishing head to further reduce roughness of the surface of the article as the article is rotating relative to the head. The cutting edges and heating surfaces can be configured in shape and size (i.e., geometry) to accommodate the article.

    摘要: A high field contrast magnetic stamper/imprinter for use in patterning of magnetic and magneto-optical (MO) recording media by contact printing, comprises: (a) a layer of a magnetic material having a high saturation magnetization Bsat≧˜1.2 and high permeability μ≧˜5, including a first, topographically patterned surface and a second surface opposite the first surface, the first, topographically patterned surface comprising a patterned plurality of spaced-apart recesses with a plurality of non-recessed areas therebetween, the topographical pattern corresponding to a magnetic pattern to be formed in a magnetic or MO recording medium; and (b) a layer of Ni on the second surface. A corrosion-resistant protective overcoat layer may be present on the topographically patterned surface. A method for manufacturing the stamper/imprinter is also disclosed.

    摘要: A reader and a method of fabricating a reader having a thermally isolated magnetoresistive element is disclosed. The method includes fabricating a magnetoresistive read transistor between a top shield and a bottom shield. The magnetoresistive read transistor is then coated with a thermally isolating material. The magnetoresistive read transistor can be coated with a zirconia compound such as zirconium diboride. For additional thermal isolation, a layer of diamond-like carbon can be deposited over the thermally isolating material.

    摘要: A light abrasive texture is applied over the data zone of a thin film magnetic disc, while a surface texture of a second roughness is applied over the landing zone. A lubricant is applied over both the landing zone and the data zone. The lubricant is a high molecular weight PFPE lubricant which has been fractionated by supercritical fluid fractionation in carbon dioxide to exclude the fractions of low molecular weight and to exclude the fractions of very high molecular weight.
