Abstract: In an example, a process for coding video data includes determining a partitioning pattern for a block of depth values comprising assigning one or more samples of the block to a first partition and assigning one or more other samples of the block to a second partition. The process also includes determining a predicted value for at least one of the first partition and the second partition based on the determined partition pattern. The process also includes coding the at least one of the first partition and the second partition based on the predicted value.

Partitioning the coded picture of the video data may include partitioning the coded picture of the video data into the plurality of blocks using the three or more different partition structures, wherein at least three of the three or more different partition structures may be used at each depth of a tree structure that represents how a particular block of the coded picture of the video data is partitioned.

Abstract: A video encoding device comprises a memory configured and at least one processor configured to: determine whether a metric meets a condition based on statistics, wherein the statistics are associated with a first video encoding mode checking order and a second video encoding mode checking order, responsive to determining that the metric meets the condition, select a first encoding mode checking order to encode the first block of video data responsive to determining that the condition is not met, select a second encoding mode checking order different from the first encoding mode checking order to encode the first block of video data, update the statistics based on the selected first or second encoding mode checking order, and encode a second block of video data, based on the updated statistics, and using the first or second mode checking order.

Abstract: Techniques for cost function measurement with respect to sign prediction-based video coding are generally described. An example device includes processing circuitry is configured to apply first and second sign combinations to transform coefficients of a stored block of video data to obtain first and second hypothesis reconstructions of the block, to measure first and second cost functions with respect to the first and second hypothesis reconstructions by determining respective sets of pixel value gradients representing differences between samples of each hypothesis reconstruction of the block and samples of a neighboring block positioned adjacent to the block. The processing circuitry is further configured to compare the respective cost functions, to select, based on the comparison, one of the hypothesis reconstructions of the block, and to code the block using the respective sign combination associated with the selected hypothesis reconstruction.
