A system and method is provided for implementing forced frequency “hops” if the time it takes to perform a particular transaction is greater than the time available on a particular carrier frequency. In one embodiment of the present invention, a radio frequency identification (RFID) base station processor (in conjunction with program information stored in a base station memory) is adapted to (i) determine the amount of time available on a particular carrier frequency (e.g., pursuant to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations, European Telecommunications Standardization Institute (ETSI) regulations, etc.), (ii) determine the amount of time it would take to perform a particular transaction, and (iii) force the base station to “hop” to another carrier frequency if the transaction time is longer than the available time. In one embodiment of the present invention, the time it would take to perform a particular transaction is the time it would take to perform the next transaction. In another embodiment of the present invention, the time it would take to perform a particular transaction is the time it would take to perform the longest (or “worst-case”) transaction. In alternate embodiments of the present invention, a transaction is defined as the transmission of information (e.g., data, commands, etc.) or both the transmission of information and the reception of related information.

The audio driver includes a speaker for producing sounds responsive to functions performed by the central processor and a microphone for receiving audio input signals. The audio driver adjusts the output volume of the speaker responsive to variations in ambient noise detected by the microphone so that the speaker produces a substantially consistent volume level in relation to the variations of ambient noise.

The RFID interrogator includes a memory in which is stored desired initial condition data of the receiver/transmitter architecture, and this initial condition data is used upon initialization of the RFID interrogator to define the operational condition of the RFID interrogator. Each individual RFID interrogator may contain unique initial condition data corresponding to the particular component tolerances of that radio system.

A communication system is provided in which a client device can communicate with a server via any one of plural communication networks, such as a WWAN, a WLAN, a wired LAN, a personal area network (e.g., Bluetooth), and any other networking architecture. More specifically, the communication client comprises a connection manager that is adapted to determine availability of each the plural communication networks to communicate data between the client and the server, select one of the communication networks from the available ones of the plural communication networks in accordance with predetermined preferences, and establish a connection with the selected one of the communication networks. The client may further comprise a client application. The connection manager provides a notification message to the client application upon establishment of the communication link. The client application then communicates data to and from the server via the selected one of the communication networks. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the communication system further includes an intelligent queuing system, comprising a client-side queue on the communication client and a server-side queue on the server. The connection manager is further adapted to determine cost associated with communicating the data on available ones of the plural communication networks and provide that information to the client-side queue. The client-side queue determines whether to communicate the data via the selected one of the communication networks based in part on the determined cost.
