Abstract:
Techniques to acquire and track pilots in a CDMA system. In an aspect, frequency acquisition of a number of signal instances (i.e., multipaths) in a received signal may be achieved concurrently based on a frequency control loop (RAFC) maintained for each finger processor of a rake receiver. Upon successful acquisition, frequency tracking of acquired multipaths may be achieved based on a combination of a frequency control loop (VAFC) maintained for an oscillator used for downconverting the received signal and the RAFCs for the finger processors. In a tracking mode, the VAFC tracks the average frequency of the acquired multipaths by adjusting the frequency of the oscillator. The RAFC of each finger processor tracks the residual frequency error (e.g., due to Doppler frequency shift) of the individual acquired multipath by adjusting the frequency of a complex sinusoidal signal used in a rotator within the finger processor.
Abstract:
A mechanism for securely locking and easily releasing a wireless device in a cradle is comprised of a release button located on an outer housing, accessible to a user. The release button extends through the outer housing to an interior in the cradle. An actuator is disposed in the housing and has an arm extending into the interior receptacle area of the cradle, wherein movement of the arm activates the mechanism. A lever is disposed within the housing and is rotatable between a first and a second position. A first end of the lever is located adjacent to the actuator, while a second end of the lever is located adjacent to the release button. A protrusion extends from the lever into the receptacle area when the lever is in the first position and is housed inside the housing when the lever is rotated to the second position. A spring connects the actuator to the lever.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for determining the data rate of a reverse link communication of an access terminal includes receiving a reverse activity bit (RAB) from an access point in the communication system, and passing the RAB to a digital filter to produce a filtered RAB. In one embodiment, the reverse link data rate is determined based on the filtered value of the RAB. Furthermore, a processor in the access terminal may determine whether the access terminal is in an idle mode, and passing a non-busy state value of the RAB to the digital filter when the access terminal is in the idle mode. The filtered RAB may be compared to a threshold to determine a mode of reverse link data rate determination. The mode defines a set of criteria for an aggressiveness level of increasing or decreasing the reverse link communication data rate. The processor, therefore, determines the data rate based on the filtered reverse activity bit in accordance with the determined mode.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for tracking signals in a wireless communication system. In one embodiment, a base station includes a rake antenna having multiple fingers. When any of the fingers goes out of lock, the base station waits a predetermined time period and then adjusts the lock detect filter. The adjustment is based on comparison of received signal energy to an adjusted energy threshold. The comparison may result in an increased energy level of the filter. In one embodiment, if a mobile station is in soft hand-off, the base station ignores the lock state of the fingers and transmits power control information based on the received signal energy. If the mobile station is not in soft hand-off a predetermined power control pattern is applied for gradual power adjustment.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for sending information to a target mobile station includes determining whether the information should be sent as short data burst messages while the target mobile station is in dormant mode, and sending the information to the target mobile station as short data burst messages, without waiting for the traffic channel to be reestablished.
Abstract:
A testing chamber is configured to evaluate the accuracy of a wireless communication device under test in a production environment. The configuration of the testing chamber may resemble an enclosed structure having a wall that includes multiple layers. An array of antennas, which serves as a layer of the wall, is strategically positioned within the testing chamber to receive and transmit signals emitted to/from the wireless communication device. Located within the testing chamber is either a stationary or moveable holder to support the wireless communication device. Furthermore, during testing, the forward link and the reverse communication links are monitored by selectively or alternatively adjusting and shifting the phase/amplitude of the antenna of the wireless communication device to mitigate the effects of multi-path fading.
Abstract:
Techniques to acquire pilots over code space and/or frequency errors. In one aspect, pilot acquisition is performed using a number of substages, and some of the substages are pipelined and performed in parallel using different processing elements. A searcher initially searches over a designated code space to find peaks, and these peaks may be re-evaluated. Finger processors then attempt to acquire the candidate peaks. The searcher may be operated to search for the next set of peaks while the finger processors process the current set of peaks. In another aspect, the full range of frequency errors for the pilots is divided into a number of frequency bins. A multi-stage scheme is used to evaluate the bins, and may employ pipelining and parallel processing such that a search for peaks in the next bin is performed while acquisition of peaks found for the current bin is attempted.
Abstract:
A power estimator for a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) receiver. A noise estimate of a received channel may be made by demodulating a received signal using an empty code or Walsh channel. The noise estimate may also be made by demodulating the Pilot signal in systems where potentially all Walsh codes are assigned to active channels. Where the channels are quadrature phase modulated, the noise estimator may take advantage of the Pilot channel configuration by demodulating only the quadrature element of the Pilot channel. The noise estimator demodulates the Pilot using signal processing stages that statistically correspond to the signal processing performed on traffic channels. The statistics of the processing performed in the noise estimate closely track the statistics of the signal processing performed on the traffic channels.
Abstract:
In a mobile communication system having a first communication device for communicating with a plurality of second communication devices, a method for performing handoff within the mobile communication system includes transmitting from at least one of the second communication devices to the first communication device a handoff list of second communication devices to which the first communication device is permitted to handoff. A channel assignment message is transmitted from each of the second communications devices in the handoff list. The handoff list includes base stations controlled by a single controller that determines which of the second communication devices transmits the channel assignment message. The base stations on the handoff list have pilot signals and the energy levels of the pilot signals are measured by the first communication device. The measured energy levels are transmitted to the controller and compared by the controller to provide an energy level list of base stations according to the comparing. The energy level list is transmitted to the first communication device and the handoff is performed according to the energy level list.
