Avoidance of the corrosion initiation sites consisting of Mn particles deposited on the TiG welded inner tube surface is achieved through suppression of emission of manganese fumes by addition of a protective non corrosive metallic layer. The latter melts during the welding and arises in a non-corrosive internal metallic coating of the welded zone.

A system for automatically tracking a surface for performing a welding operation comprises a frame and pair of ring gears movably mounted to the frame. The ring gears are spaced apart from each other. Three weld heads are movably mounted to each ring gear. Each weld head has a welding torch for providing a weld and a laser scanning device for scanning a surface and for measuring distances over the surface. A control system communicates with the laser scanner for receiving the measured distances and for controlling the movement of the ring gears and the weld heads.
Abstract:
The invention comprises a method and apparatus for handling the weld bead scarfed from the interior surface of continuous seam welded metal tube or pipe incident to its manufacture. A section of tube of predetermined length is cut from the lead and of the advancing continuous tube, having the scarfed weld bead therein, by a rotary cutter. The speed of the individual section is increased to create a gap between the individual section and the continuous tube, and a scissor mechanism severs the weld bead within the gap. The severed section of weld bead is then conveyed within the associated individual section of tube to a tube accumulation or storage area for removal and disposal.

A welding fixture is disclosed for temporarily retaining two tubular workpieces relative to one another. The welding fixture includes a plurality of shoe assemblies, each of the shoe assemblies being radially movable between a contracted position and an expanded position. The welding fixture further includes an actuator operatively connected to each of the shoe assemblies for selectively moving each shoe assembly between the contracted position and the expanded position. Upon expansion of the shoe assemblies, the welding fixture is operative to reinforce and temporarily retain a joint formed between two tubular workpieces during a joining procedure, such as welding.

An assembly arranged for mounting to a pipe to be welded is provided, wherein the assembly includes a support pipe having a counterweight slidably mounted therealong. The support pipe includes a V-shaped lock receiving the pipe to be welded, with a clamp chain arranged for securing the pipe to be welded relative to the V-shaped lock, whereupon sliding of the counterweight relative to the support pipe provides for counter-balancing of the pipe to be welded in an adjustable manner.
Abstract:
A volatile flux coating solution which, when dry, provides durable protective film coating containing residual flux, and a fluxing-soldering process utilizing such a solution. The coating solution is applied to a cleaned metal surface to be later joined and soldered to another metal surface, thereby obviating the need for recleaning and refluxing at the time of joining and soldering. Where two objects prepared according to this invention are joined, no additional cleaning or fluxing is required, thus saving significant time and labor at the work site. However, an object prepared according to the present invention may nevertheless be joined to an unprepared object at the work site if the unprepared object is prepared by conventional techniques, thereby allowing the prepared object to be joined with either prepared or unprepared objects. The soldering process is completed by soldering the two objects together according to conventional techniques.

A soldering structure of a tubular material for soldering one end portion of a tubular material to an auxiliary plate with a soldering material coated thereto, wherein the plane auxiliary plate is formed therein with a communicating hole for allowing the tubular material to be inserted therein, one end portion of the tubular material is inserted into the communicating hole and temporarily secured to the auxiliary plate through a deformation of the auxiliary plate at the end portion of the tubular material or the peripheral area of the communicating hole before soldering, thereby to close one end of a space between the peripheral surface of the tubular material and the inner wall of the communicating hole, the space allowing the soldering material melted to be pooled therein during soldering, and the tubular material and auxiliary plate being soldered when the melted soldering material pooled in the space is hardened.

A device for cleaning pipe or tubing and fittings is disclosed consisting of an internal brush for cleaning of fittings and an external brush for cleaning of tube or pipe prior to soldering or brazing. Both brushes are provided in a single tool so that either tube or fitting can be cleaned without changing or reversing the tool. A drive socket is provided on the brush holder shell to permit ready interchangeability of tools and ready selection of drive means between manual and motor driven operation. A selection of drive adaptors is provided.

A very high hermeticity glass to metal seal comprising a round cylindrically shaped glass member having an outside diameter; a tubular sleeve of resilient metal having (i) a first end with an inside diameter slightly larger than said outside diameter of said glass member, and (ii) a reduced diameter portion adjacent to said first end thereof with the diameter of said reduced diameter portion being slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the glass member; a thin metalized layer on a first end of the glass member adapted to be inserted into said first end of the tubular metal sleeve so as to define an annular gap therebetween, the glass member being inserted as far as possible into the sleeve so that the end thereof is into abutting relation with said reduced diameter portion of said sleeve so as to form a capillary gap therebetween. Subsequently solder means is flowed, while in a molten form, into said annular gap pursuant to a pulling-like force into said capillary gap thus forming, when said solder means cools, a very high hermeticity glass to metal seal.

A method for joining together a plurality of tubes to form a frame, such as a bicycle frame, includes providing a plurality of projections upon an end portion of a tube for effecting a projection weld with each projection. The tube end portion complements or corresponds to the contour of the surface of a tube to which it is joined so that when the tubes are contacted with one another only the projections make contact thereby leaving a gap of uniform width between the pipes. After tacking the pipes together with projection welds, the gap around each joint is filled with brazing solder.
