A hydratable granular food product which can be used to make soups and sauces and which does not require stirring before or during cooking. The product is comprised of granules which are hydrophobic and hydrophilic and do not tend to form clumps when cold or ambient water or milk is added. At least about 90% of the granules have a size from about 1000 microns to about 175 microns and have an outer coating which contains an emulsifier. In a particularly preferred application, the granular food product can be admixed with a carbohydrate such as pasta and then hydrated together with the pasta to make a ready-to-eat pasta and sauce.

The fabricating tooling provides for a preselected clearance between a punch peripheral wall and a die cavity internal wall in each of such plurality of diameter-reduction operations to achieve a desired decrease in side wall thickness as the precoated substrate is moved into a die cavity by relative movement of its respective punch. In a flat-rolled steel embodiment, one-piece can bodies for carbonated beverage packs require less metal than that currently being used to produce the commercially drawn and ironed product from flat-rolled steel, and can body finishing steps are diminished.

A metal container for holding fluids is provided having a bottom wall including a externally convex dome portion and a plurality of supporting feet formed therein. The supporting feet are circumferentially spaced apart from each other and projected generally downward beyond the dome portion. Each supporting foot has formed thereon stand features and stacking features. The stand features are radially spaced from the longitudinal axis of the container and disposed at downwardmost locations on the feet to alone support the container in an upright position on a flat horizontal surface when the container is not internally pressurized. The stacking features are disposed adjacent to the stand features and define, in cross-sectional elevation view, axial stacking surfaces and radial stacking surfaces. The axial stacking surfaces are axially positioned in relation to stand features and the radial stacking surfaces are radially positioned in relation to the longitudinal axis so as to interfit with an upper seamed edge of an adjacent below container to alone provide for stacking engagement when the container is not internally pressurized. Since the bottom wall does not rely on any large-radius externally concave mechanical features to resist internal pressurization, a thinner gauge metal can be used to satisfy design parameters and can achieve cost and metal reduction savings. The profile of the bottom wall also results in very small values for profile deformation and changes in can dimensions over a wide range of internal pressures.

Tension elongation during redraw is controlled over side wall height by clamping solely between planar clamping surfaces, tooling configurations and preselected clearances to decrease thickness gage uniformly over side wall height between flange metal open end of can body and curved transition zone at closed end. Surface area of the cavity entrance zone for each die is fabricated about multiple radii forming sharp edge about which coated can stock is drawn into each die cavity. Curved surface transition zone for each punch is maintained large in relation to sheet metal substrate starting gage which facilitates change of configuration of metal from planar state into cylindrical side wall.

An injection molded container having a generally circular bottom panel, a side wall extending from the bottom panel, and lid receiving lip structure extending about the projecting wall end defining a container end opening opposite the bottom panel. The side wall extends about a central axis through the bottom panel and end opening. The side wall comprises a continuous outer wall face intersecting a plane extending normal to the axis along a substantially circularly curved line and an inner wall surface defined by a series of facets. The inner wall face intersects the plane along a line having a substantially polygonal shape composed of straight line segments corresponding to respective facets with each straight line segment extending tangent to a second substantially circular line within the first circular line. The side wall defines a series of spaced load supporting ribs each defined between a facet and the outer face. Each rib has a maximal thickness equal to the radial distance between the first and second circularly curved lines proceeding from the center of the panel. The side wall has a series of thin walled segments each having a minimal thickness along a radial line extending medially between adjacent ends of adjacent straight line segments. The maximal thickness rib has sufficient cross sectional area to assure injection molding material flow from the bottom panel area to the lip structure and sufficient column strength to enable mechanical capping of the container. The thin walled segments are narrow and just thick enough to effectively resist radially inward deformation when the container wall is supported internally during printing.
