Disclosed is a print engine having a page-width printhead assembly and a motorized transfer roller located adjacent to the printhead. The transfer roller is also adjacent to the sheet media path of the device which uses the engine. The printhead is oriented to print directly onto the transfer roller. The engine has a second roller closely adjacent to the transfer roller and on an opposite side of the path for pressing the sheet onto the transfer roller. In some embodiments, the printhead has a surface adjacent to the transfer roller that carries capping seals on either side of the ink ejecting area. The printhead is held off of the transfer roller by a solenoid but parked against the transfer roller when not in use.

A method and apparatus for printing multiple simultaneous images onto a photosensitive media comprises the steps of imaging light from a light source through an optics assembly (75) to a polarization beamsplitter (80). The polarization beamsplitter (80) produces light having a first polarized state and light having a second polarized state. The first polarized light is directed to a first spatial light modulator (90). The first spatial light modulator is addressed with a first signal to create a first modulated light beam, which is imaged through a print lens assembly onto the photosensitive media. A second polarized light is directed to a second spatial light modulator (95). The second spatial light modulator is addressed with a second signal to create a second modulated light beam, which is imaged through the print lens onto the photosensitive media. The first modulated light beam and the second modulated light beam create at least two simultaneous images on the photosensitive media.

The present invention provides an apparatus capable of controlling the duration of voltages applied to line exposure elements in proportion to the gray levels of a color to produce a gentle gradation of the color. This is achieved in the present invention by converting exposure data into compensated exposure data in which the duration of the exposure operation is compensated according to predetermined characteristics. A binary printhead having M recording elements per inch is used to record each mainscan line (1/M lines per inch) of pixels using two sublines for recording each mainscan line. In a first embodiment, pixels to be developed in a first color are recorded during a first subline, and during a second subline of pixels to be developed in a second color are recorded using a different exposure duration from that used in recording the first subline of pixels. In a second embodiment, pixels of the first and second colors are recorded during a first subline and supplementary exposure is provided for completing the recording of pixels of the second color during a second subline of recording.

The essential feature of the color image recording apparatus of the present invention is that it uses a laser light source capable of simultaneous emission of laser beams associated with exposure to R, G and B light. The apparatus also uses a light deflector and a device for selectively reflecting or transmitting said laser beams, for example, a rotating polygonal mirror in which at least one of the reflecting faces has a different spectral characteristic of reflection than other faces or a light deflector and at least one color filter that operates in synchronism with the light deflector.In the present invention, a laser beam having a wavelength associated with exposure to light either one or R, G and B colors is separated from the light beams emitted from the laser light source, and the recording material is exposed to successive beams of different colors, one for each scanning line, to insure exposure for a full-color image by three scanning lines. Since this obviates the need for providing the reflecting mirror and the dichroic mirrors that have been necessary to align the optical axes of R, G and B laser beams in the prior art color image recording apparatuses, it becomes possible to construct a compact and inexpensive color image recording apparatus.
