The present invention relates to an arrangement of measuring devices on a semitrailer motor vehicle having a tractive unit, a semitrailer unit and a fifth wheel fastened to the tractive unit. An intermediate plate is disposed between the fifth wheel, the tractive unit and the semitrailer and is connected to the semitrailer. Measuring devices are disposed on the intermediate plate for measuring acceleration, tractive or braking forces and for measuring the weight of the semitrailer. The measured values are used to influence and improve the driving behavior of the semitrailer motor vehicle.

A load measuring device is incorporated in a damper or suspension strut of a vehicle. The device comprises an annular plate which is interposed between axially spaced opposite faces of a thrust bearing and an abutment for the adjacent end of the spring, and the plate is supported from the opposite faces at at least three angularly spaced locations of which a location on one side of the plate is disposed substantially at the mid-point in the circumferential length between a pair of locations on the opposite side of the plate. Bending moments in the plate are monitored by thick film technology to give a direct reading of load.

An improved ladle transfer car for transporting ladles and providing accurate and consistent weight measurements for the ladle and its contents. In a preferred embodiment the ladle transfer car comprises a car body supported upon multiple truck assemblies. Connecting each of the truck assemblies to the car body is a shear beam load cell pin. Associated with each of the truck assemblies is a stabilizer assembly. The stabilizer assemblies permit the vertical movement of the car body relative to the truck assemblies and they help to prevent the horizontal movement of the car body relative to the truck assemblies. Each of the stabilizer assemblies includes a pivot arm which extends substantially perpendicular to the major axis of the truck assemblies. The pivot arm is pivotally connected at one end of the car body and pivotally connected at the other end to a respective truck assembly. Mounted in the immediate proximity of each of the shear beam load cell pins is a keeper assembly. The keeper assemblies comprise a keeper plate having a pair of threaded openings therein. Jacking bolts are threaded through the openings until the ends of the bolts contact and securely engage the outer diameter of the shear beam load cell pin. The keeper assemblies prevent the rotation of the shear beam load cell pins thereby helping to ensure the proper alignment of the pins relative to the load.

Strain gauge transducers (15) are fitted to the leading and trailing faces of a vehicle axle between each wheel (14) and the adjacent suspension (13). They have strain gauges (6, 7, 8, 9) in balanced bridge formation and their orientation is such that their outputs can be combined in one circuit (16, 17, 18) to produce an indication of axle loading and in another circuit to produce an indication (26) of torsion, these signals not being influenced by irrelevant strains. The information from the transducers can be combined to indicate individual axle loading, and total loading, and the torsional signal can be used in an anti-skid braking system.
