An acoustic logging tool including an elongated body, one or more acoustic transmitters, one or more acoustic receivers, and a broadband acoustic absorption region. A substantial portion of the broadband acoustic absorption region is between the transmitter and the receiver. The acoustic energy absorber includes a first absorber for absorbing a first mode of acoustic energy and a second absorber for absorbing a second mode of acoustic energy. The acoustic absorption material used to make the acoustic absorbers has an acoustic impedance between 20% and 120% of the material used to construct the acoustic logging tool. The acoustic logging tool includes an elongated hollow tool body, an insert configured to be inserted into the tool body, and a ring configured to be inserted onto the insert. A first element is supported by the ring and exposed to a pressure field, and a second element is supported by the ring and exposed to a pressure field. The first element and the second element translate pressure from outside the tool body to the ring. The first element is supported on the opposite side of the ring from the second element, so that pressure translated to the ring by the first element substantially cancels the pressure translated to the ring by the second element. The ring substantially acoustically isolates the first and second element from the tool body and the insert.

A casing sensor and methods for sensing using a casing sensor are disclosed. The casing sensor includes a casing shoe and a sensor coupled to the casing shoe. A casing data relay includes a downhole receiver coupled to a well casing and a transmitter coupled to the receiver. The casing sensor may be coupled to the transmitter. A drill string actuator may be controllable through the downhole receiver.

A well has a vertical casing with a window, and a lateral wellbore which communicates with the window, and which may have a casing or liner. A window assembly aligned with the window has respective passageways for first and second tubing strings, and has a concave surface for deflecting the first tubing string out into the lateral wellbore. The passageway for the second tubing string has a portion which is inclined at a very small angle with respect to a vertical centerline of the vertical casing. As the first tubing string is run into the vertical casing, a rotational locator is releasably coupled thereto by a soft release coupling mechanism. After the locator effects rotational orientation, the coupling mechanism is released and then permits the first tubing string to move therepast without damage. A seal assembly on the first tubing string is covered by a protective sleeve as it is inserted into the well, and exits the protective sleeve after entering the lateral wellbore.

A core sampling method, particularly for the oil industry, wherein actual core sampling is performed by means of a core sampler (1) comprising at least one Inner barrel (5), an outer barrel (2) and a bit (3), and a substantially axial compressive force (F) is exerted on the top (7A) of a core sample (7) being formed, at least during a major part of the core sampling process, said force being within a range determined particularly on the basis of the material of the core sample (7), whereafter the force (F) is removed at the latest before the core sample (7) is withdrawn from the inner barrel (5). A core sampler for carrying out the method is also provided.

There is disclosed a pressure gauge construction in which the dial plate includes recessed indentations interfit with pins projecting beyond the front face of the gauge movement for supporting a dial plate in place. An adhesive cement is contained between the back face of the dial plate and the front face of the movement effects an adhesive bonding therebetween.

The improved insert for a ground engaging tool, with a plurality of sockets for receiving a respective insert comprises a body having first and second portions and first and second zones. The first zone may consist of tungsten carbide and metallic cobalt, with preselected dimensions adapted for press fitting within a respective socket of the ground engaging tool. The second body portion may define an earth engaging portion. The second zone may consist of encrusted diamond pellets, tungsten carbide and metallic cobalt, fused together. The first and second zones may be fused together with the first zone being substantially free of encrusted diamond pellets.

An apparatus and method for orienting directional tools within a bore hole by recognizing and compensating for field biases brought about by ferromagnetic anamolies surrounding the bore hole, ferromagnetic casing strings and electrical/electronic tool components. The present invention includes the steps of measuring the magnetic field within a bore hole before casing strings are put in place and again measuring the magnetic field after such casings are in place. The ferromagnetic formation anamolies are detected in the first step of measuring the field prior to casing placement and further bias characteristics are determined in the second magnetic field measurement step after the casings are placed. Alternately, a conventional gyroscopic survey can be carried out to establish a bias in an already cased bore hole. Once a magnetic field bias has been established for the bore hole (for a particular casing string) this field bias is utilized to calculate and correct an azimuthal reading measured by electronic tools during placement within a particular casing. For a given location Y within the bore hole the field biases previously determined and resulting from formational anamolies and adjacent casings are factored into an azimuthal calculation in order to provide an accurate azimuth for tool orientation.

A dispensing system and method for two different fuels having different octane ratings respectively stored in two storage tanks, according to which a flow line extends from each tank to a chamber for receiving each fuel from its corresponding tank. A conduit extends from the chamber to a system for passing fuel from the chamber to the system for dispensing; and a valve is provided in the chamber for selectively blocking flow of the non-selected fuel into the chamber while permitting flow of the selected fuel into the chamber for passage, via the conduit, to the system. The valve eliminates any flow of the non-elected fuel into the chamber caused by the flow of the selected fuel.

An acoustic logging tool, useful for creating a circumferential image of an earth borehole or well casing, which includes one or many acoustic transceivers mounted in substantially the same plane, in a drill string sub. The mounting receptacles are located in blocks, flexibly mounted in fixed inserts within the interior of the drill string sub. Each of the transceivers is structured to provide temperature and pressure compensation. The echo signals received by the transceivers are digitized and processed to eliminate extraneous noise created by the ringing of the transducers, by the signals reflected from the material backing the transducer ultrasonic element, and by any other sources inherent to the drilling environment. Digitization and further processing also allows for signal enhancement, thus allowing detection of signals in the presence of substantial noise. Temperature and pressure determinations are used to correct the acoustic velocity of the waves passing through the drilling fluid, "on-the-fly", as the drilling process continues.
