摘要:
Gold carboxylates and a process for preparing gold salts of organic carboxylic acids are described. The gold carboxylates are represented by the formula ##STR1## in which R represents hydrogen or an organic group of valence y and x, y and z each represent a positive integer such that x=y.z/3. The process comprises reacting an alkali or alkaline earth metal salt of an organic carboxylic acid with a gold salt in an organic liquid which at least partially dissolves the alkali and/or alkaline earth metal salt, the gold salt, and the desired gold carboxylate product, but is not a solvent for the salt formed between the alkali or alkaline earth metal and the anion of the gold salt.

A process for preparing hydrocarbon-soluble transition metal salts of organic carboxylic acids having improved properties wherein the transition metal is one capable of having a multiplicity of oxidation states is described. The process comprises the steps of (a) providing at least one transition metal compound wherein the transition metal is at one of its higher positive oxidation states, (b) treating said transition metal compound with at least one inorganic reducing agent forming an intermediate containing the transition metal in a lower positive oxidation state, and (c) reacting said intermediate with at least one organic carboxylic acid containing at least 5 carbon atoms to form the transition metal salt of said carboxylic acid. The transition metal salts prepared in accordance with the process of the invention are useful in a variety of applications including resins, inks, paints, lubricants and fuels.

A wood-preservative package or bandage is disclosed which comprises: a first flexible sheet; a wood-preservative material having a grease-like consistency arranged in a layer upon said first flexible sheet; a perforated flexible sheet overlying said preservative material and secured to the marginal edge of said first flexible sheet, the perforations in said perforated flexible sheet being of sufficient number and dimension to permit said wood-preservative material to pass through said perforations; and another flexible sheet overlying and secured to said perforated flexible sheet. This wood-preservative package is particularly suitable for treating poles used for supporting telephone lines, power transmission lines and the like that have been held in stock for extended periods of time and for the ground-line treatment of such poles.

A process for impregnating green wood with oil-soluble metal salts is described. The method comprises(a) contacting the green wood with an aqueous system comprising(i) water,(ii) at least one oil-soluble metal salt of an organic carboxylic acid, and(iii) at least one surfactant for a period of time sufficient to enable the metal salt to penetrate into the wood, and(b) removing the wood from contact with the aqueous system. Good penetration of the metal salt into the green wood is realized by this method when conducted under vacuum, at atmospheric pressure or at elevated pressures. Preferably, the metal salt is a preservative such as a fungicide, and the aqueous system also contains other desirable components such as fire retardants, coloring agents and insecticides.

Metallo-organic compositions soluble in oils and hydrocarbon solvents, of a high transitional metal content and highly overbased character, are prepared from sources of transitional metals (or of transitional in conjunction with nontransitional metals) reacted with mixed organic acids comprising at least one monocarboxylic acid and a second acid, either a sulfonic acid or a different molecular weight monocarboxylic acid. Formation of the complexes requires the use of excesses of metal over acids, and the use of an oxygen-supplying material such as air, regardless of whether the metal source be a free metal, an oxide or a hydroxide. Alkoxyalkanols or glycols may be used in addition to the required acids. These compositions comprise (1) a polynuclear core of a normally insoluble metal oxide or hydroxide which is crystalline by X-ray and electron diffraction observation, with metal hydroxyl carboxylate groups (and when present, sulfonate or alkoxyalkanol or glycol groups) ionically and hydrogen bonded to the core element atoms, and additional acid groups having an unbound association with a core and its bonded groups; (2) ultimate particles having structure with minimum average undissociated molecular weight of about 10.sup.4 ; and (3) a ratio of total moles of metal to total moles of organic acid moieties being greater than 1 to 1.
