摘要: A railroad signaling method includes measuring a track current on a first track section, measuring a local voltage on the railroad line wires, determining whether a magnitude of the track current meets or exceeds a threshold value independent of the local voltage, and determining whether the track current and the local voltage are nominally in phase with one another in a manner that is independent of the track current measuring step. A first signal is provided only if the magnitude is determined to meet or exceed the threshold and the track current and local voltage are determined to be nominally in phase. The first signal is an indication that a train is not present in the track section, that the track section does not have a broken rail, and that the insulated joints that bound the track section do not include a fault condition. An associated relay arrangement is also provided.

摘要: A modular sensor apparatus for detecting the location of a movable track point includes a primary sensor and a secondary sensor disposed on a sensor mount that is movable with respect to a frame that is mounted on a switch machine. The secondary sensor is offset from the primary sensor in order to permit the secondary sensor to detect the need for imminent readjustment of the track point prior to the time at which the track point becomes maladjusted and in need of immediate readjustment. The sensor mount is threadably adjustable with respect to the frame, whereby once the primary sensor has detected the position of the movable track point when it is disposed against a fixed stock rail, the sensor mount can be moved a fixed threshold distance by rotating a thumbwheel a fixed number of turns.

摘要: A system and method of monitoring light emitted from a light emitting diode (LED) display device, which typically has a plurality of selectively energizable display segments which are grouped to form desired shapes and/or alphanumeric characters, is provided, particularly for use in an Aspect Display Unit (ADU) that requires vitality when utilized in the railroad industry as a component of an Automatic Train Protection system utilized in the railroad industry. In a preferred embodiment, each particular segment of the LED display device is independently monitored by an accompanying independent dual photo-transistor circuit when a non-vital output periodically drives each segment to a known electrical state and then back to the original state. A first and a second photo-transistor is used for each segment of the LED display. Each segment and the accompanying first and second phototransistor is surrounded by a shield which prevents light from other segments from being detected by the particular first and second photo-transistor. The first photo-transistor is directed toward the particular segment to sense light emitted therefrom and ambient light thereabout, while the second photo-transistor is directed away from the particular segment sense only ambient light thereabout that segment. The first and second photo-transistors generate electrical signals which are representative of the light detected by each of the first and second photo-transistors. The generated electrical signals drive a monitoring circuit which generates error signals representative of malfunctioning LED display segments, based on a comparison to a fixed voltage of a difference in voltages provided from the first and second photo-transistors.

摘要: A decelerometer is provided for detecting and measuring inertial deceleration and acceleration of a vehicle moving in a first direction and alternatively moving in a second direction which opposes the first direction. The decelerometer uses a tilt sensor which changes voltage as the tilt sensor is rotated clockwise or counter clockwise or is otherwise tilted from a level position. Two voltage outputs from the tilt sensor are processed to convert from AC to DC and from DC to digital information, which subsequently is processed by a processing unit for decisions to be made relative to accelerating, decelerating, and braking of the vehicle.

摘要: A system is disclosed to selectively initiate braking at a rear section of a railway train upon initiation of a selected front braking condition at the front section of the railway vehicle. The system utilizes an air sensor preferably constructed in the form of an insect excluder device to detect release of brake pipe air from an exhaust port upon initiation of braking at the front section of the vehicle. An appropriate signal is produced by the air sensor, thus permitting detector circuitry to detect that front braking has been initiated. A transmitter, typically located in the cab of the locomotive, is electrically connected to the detector circuitry. When the detector circuitry indicates that the selected front braking condition has been initiated, the transmitter transmits a brake initiation signal to a receiver located at the rear of the vehicle. The receiver then actuates pneumatic braking equipment at the rear to initiate rear braking. The air sensor may include a generally rigid insect shield connected to actuate the armature of an electrical switch upon passage of air. Such an air sensor may also be constructed utilizing a deformable insect shield configured to operate as a variable capacitor when air passes through the exhaust port. If connected in a resonant circuit, this variable capacitor may provide a detectable voltage variation which can be used to indicate initiation of front braking.

摘要: A cab signaling apparatus for use on board a railway vehicle which is propelled on rail tracks by an electric drive motor. The invention utilizes a cab signal transmitted to the vehicle through a track circuit in the rails. On board receiving of the cab signal is done by a receiving coil, which may be mounted in front of the lead axle, as a current transformer around the lead axle, or at another location where the cab signal current is relatively strong. The cab signal that is sensed has a cab signal component and an interference component. On board the vehicle a sampled signal is taken which has the characteristic of the electromagnetic interference subjected to the cab signal receiver coil. The sampled signal is then subtracted from the sensed cab signal such that the sampled interference signal cancels the interference component of the cab signal. Embodiments include placing the sampling device as an inductive coil behind the lead axle and in other embodiments in front of the lead axle above the cab signal sensing coil. A series arrangement with selective polarity on the coils permits a vital arrangement. In some embodiments the sampling to achieve a sampled signal characteristic of electromagnetic interference is done by using a current transformer coil on the electric drive motor cable.

摘要: A differential magnetic wheel detector is disclosed which identifies the presence and direction of a railway vehicle. The wheel detector includes a primary winding, a secondary winding and signal processing circuitry. The primary winding is excited by a source of AC energy to produce a magnetic flux in the wheel of the railway vehicle. The secondary winding senses a change in voltage induced by the magnetic flux in the railway wheel. The secondary winding includes two coils in a differential bridge which prevents external factors from interfering with the sensing of the wheel. The signal processing device transforms the voltage change into a signal identifying the presence and direction of the railway vehicle.

摘要: An improved railway cab signal transmitter for transmitting a cab signal onto a pair of rails for reception by a railway vehicle on said rails. A tuning arrangement is connected across the rails to generally resonate with the leaving end impedance bond at a preselected cab signal frequency. The cab signal is coded at the preselected frequency such that the resonant circuit acts in conjunction with the code signal generation to act as a constant current signal source feeding the rails. A reduction in the maximum cab signal rail current is achieved thereby mitigating runby cab signal currents which might be available for reception by following trains. Embodiments of the tuning arrangement use a capacitor on the primary winding of the feed transformer. Other embodiments include inductance in series with a capacitor. Receivers for wayside displays that also use the cab signal current include embodiments having a capacitor or a capacitor/inductor across the wayside receiver transmitter secondary.
