Abstract:
A turbocharger cartridge and engine cylinder head assembly includes a turbocharger cartridge having a center housing defining a bore therethrough, bearings housed in the bore, a shaft rotatably supported in the bearings, a compressor wheel affixed to one end of the shaft, and a turbine wheel affixed to an opposite end of the shaft. The engine cylinder head defines a receptacle in which the turbocharger cartridge is disposed. The cartridge defines a cartridge oil circuit and the engine cylinder head defines an engine oil circuit. An oil circuit connector plug is removably installed in a socket in the head, the plug defining a connector passage that mates up with an oil supply conduit in the engine cylinder head and with an oil supply passage in the center housing such that oil is conducted from the oil supply conduit through the connector passage to the bore.
Abstract:
A method for controlling a variable-geometry turbine (24) that includes a variable-geometry mechanism that is movable between a fully closed position closing a relatively greater portion of the turbine nozzle and a fully open position closing a relatively smaller portion of the nozzle. The turbine (24) further comprises a waste gate (40) movable between a closed position and an open position in which some of the exhaust gas bypasses the turbine (24). At low engine speeds, turbocharger boost us regulated by regulating the position of the wastegate. At high engine speeds, the variable geometry is fully open and the wastegate is opened again. When at medium engine speeds, the variable geometry mechanism is to be moved from its closed position toward its fully open position, the waste gate (40) is in an open position to cause a proportion of the exhaust gas to bypass the turbine (24) and thereby reduce the pressure of the exhaust gas in the chamber. While this reduced pressure of the exhaust gas is in effect, the variable-geometry mechanism is moved from the fully closed position toward the fully open position while simultaneously the waste gate begins to close.
Abstract:
A turbocharger for internal combustion engines, having a heat shield disposed between a turbine housing and center housing of the turbocharger for shielding the center housing from exhaust gases passing through the turbine. The heat shield in one embodiment is centered on a generally conical surface of the center housing, by engagement between the conical surface and a centering portion of the heat shield. In another embodiment, the heat shield has a generally conical portion that is non-axisymmetric, having a plurality of radially enlarged lobes that engage a radially inwardly facing surface of the turbine housing for centering the heat shield.

Abstract:
A turbocharger (20) having a sliding piston type variable turbine nozzle includes a tubular piston (40) disposed in a bore (32) of the turbine housing and axially slidable relative to the turbine housing, the piston being slidable between a closed position and an open position for blocking the nozzle (36) opening by an amount dependent on axial positioning of the piston so as to regulate flow into the turbine wheel (30). The turbine housing (32) and piston (40) are structured and arranged to define a cavity (50) therebetween, and there are seals (52a, 52b) between the turbine housing and piston for sealing the cavity, the turbine housing (32) defining a passage (54) connecting with the cavity (50) and adapted to be connected with a fluid source such that application of differential fluid pressure through the passage to the cavity urges the piston to axially slide in the turbine housing.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a turbine (1) for a turbocharger, comprising a turbine wheel (2) and a turbine housing (5) forming a passage (6) for guiding a fluid flow to the turbine wheel (2), said passage (6) comprising a variable throat providing a throat area (8) as a smallest cross section of the fluid flow, wherein the variable throat is always defined by a annular member (7) surrounding the turbine wheel (2) and being movable in the axial direction of the turbine wheel (2).
Abstract:
A variable nozzle device for a turbocharger comprises an annular arrangement of vanes disposed in a nozzle formed between an inner wall and an outer wall, said outer wall being constituted by an axially displaceable member, wherein said axially displaceable member is displaceable by an action exerted from the side of the inner wall.
Abstract:
A turbocharger having a variable geometry turbine inlet incorporates a piston movable to vary the area of the inlet nozzle into the turbine. Vanes extending from the heat shield for flow control in the nozzle are engaged by the piston in a first closed position. In a second open position, the piston is spaced from the vanes increasing the inlet nozzle area.

A turbocharger assembly includes a center housing rotating assembly, which comprises a center housing, bearings housed in the center housing, a shaft rotatably supported in the bearings, and compressor and turbine wheels affixed to opposite ends of the shaft; an engine cylinder head and a housing member formed together as a one-piece integral structure, wherein the housing member defines a compressor volute that receives compressed air from the compressor wheel, a turbine volute for receiving exhaust gas from the engine, a turbine nozzle for directing exhaust gas from the turbine volute into the turbine wheel, and a turbine contour; a compressor contour plug that defines an axial inlet for the compressor and a compressor contour; and a wastegate unit operable for allowing exhaust gas to bypass the turbine wheel when the wastegate unit is open and preventing exhaust gas from bypassing the turbine wheel when the wastegate unit is closed.
Abstract:
An engine cylinder head and turbocharger assembly includes a turbocharger having a turbine housing, wherein part of the turbine housing is integrated into a casting of the engine cylinder head. The turbocharger is arranged with respect to the engine cylinder head such that the rotational axis of the turbocharger is transverse to the engine axis along which the engine cylinders are spaced. A compressor housing of the turbocharger is oriented toward an air intake side of the engine cylinder head, and the turbine housing is oriented toward an exhaust side of the engine cylinder head.
