The present invention provides a method in a computer system of integrating a compression system with an operating system. The computer system preferably comprises at least a memory device and one storage device. A user-supplied device driver is provided for storage devices that are not supported by the computer system to enable the computer system to communicate with the storage devices. In response to initialization of the computer system, the operating/compression system is loaded into the memory device and begins executing before any user-supplied device drivers are loaded into the memory device. Any compressed volume files located on the computer system are assigned drive letters at this time. When the user-supplied device drivers are loaded into the memory device, drive letters are assigned to the various storage devices. A drive letter conflict resolution scheme is provided to resolve conflicts that occur when the operating system attempts to assign a drive letter. The compression system assigns drive letters to compressed volume files (in the case where a compressed drive is created from free space on an existing drive) or to host drives (in the case where the contents of an existing drive are compressed).

An object-oriented framework comprises system services, objects, and integration interfaces which unify retrieval and browsing of data among multiple different application programs, document formats, and local and remote data storage sites. The framework provides a hyperlink object which encapsulates general hyperlink navigation functions. The hyperlink object has a moniker which references a hyperlink's target, and a location string which designates a location in the target. The hyperlink object uses the moniker to retrieve the target as an object in the framework, and causes the object to display a view of the target at the location. The framework also provides a browse context object which maintains a navigation stack of navigated hyperlink targets, and allows passing of window and navigation tool bar position information to a frame in which the target is displayed to effect the appearance of window reuse when navigating between frames. The framework also includes a cache and table of running objects to speed return navigation to recently navigated targets.

A mechanism for detecting corruption of computer programs is provided. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a checksum is used to determine when a computer program has been corrupted. Upon initially starting a computer program, a first checksum is calculated for the computer program. When the computer program is requested to perform an operation, a second checksum is calculated for the computer program. Corruption of the computer program is indicated when the first checksum does not equal the second checksum.

An operating system shell provides a graphical user interface having a windowing environment with a desktop. The shell synthesizes a hypertext page for display as the desktop in the graphical user interface. The hypertext page has an embedded software object which provides graphical icon-oriented and menu-driven user interface elements for activating operating system services in the displayed hypertext page. The shell also provides windowed hypertext pages for managing file system folders. The shell synthesizes the hypertext pages from templates which can be edited to incorporate a variety of multi-media enhancements with the user interface elements in the graphical user interface. Templates can be associated with specific folders in the file system to provide folder specific hypertext pages integrated with user interface elements for managing the folder.

The method comprises generating data for each of a plurality of students, the data pertaining to an aspect of the student's interaction with an educational system; combining the generated data to form a combined data set; analyzing the combined data set to identify clusters, each representing similar students according to a mathematical model; and adapting the educational system to provide a customized learning experience for a particular student based on an identified cluster.
