Disclosed herein are systems and methods for a lamp assembly having a novel design for fitting two or more tube-shaped lamps end-to-end. Such an end-to-end structure may be constructed for use inside a single protective sleeve, such as one constructed of transparent quartz in embodiments where the assembly is used in a decontamination reactor equipment. In exemplary embodiments, the lamps are securely coupled, or otherwise fastened or linked, together end-to-end using any appropriate means for ensuring the integrity and longevity of the connection between the ends of the lamps. The integrity of this end-to-end connection would prevail under any and all circumstances, such as shipping or otherwise moving the assembly, or under normal or abnormal operating conditions, or even in the event that any equipment in which the lamp assembly is used fails during its operation.

Systems and methods for cleaning protective sleeves in UV decontamination systems are disclosed. In one embodiment, a system for decontaminating contaminated media includes a translucent sleeve surrounding a light source, and a housing configured to receive the sleeve. A distance between an outer surface of the sleeve and an inner surface of the housing defines an annulus for flowing a contaminated fluid. The system also includes a pump for flowing the contaminated fluid through the annulus. In addition, the system in such embodiments may include a honing material in the contaminated fluid, where the flowing of the honing material against the outer surface of the sleeve removes debris aggregated on the outer surface of the translucent sleeve.

A plug for an enclosure for holding a radiation source is provided. The plug is formed from a material that emits visible light when the radiation source is energized, such that the status of the radiation source may be determined by an operator without the need for status monitoring equipment. The plug seals the radiation source from the environment to prevent ozone formation and to prevent leakage into or out of the enclosure.

A method and system for fluid purification is disclosed herein. In accordance with the present invention, an improved technique for recovering a decontaminated effluent after photocatalytic decontamination of a contaminated fluid is achieved. A slurry is formed by mixing a contaminated fluid with photocatalytic particles having an agglomeration property, and the photocatalytic particles are excited to render a treated slurry that includes a decontaminated fluid and the photocatalytic particles. The treated slurry is directed into a filter unit that includes at least one separation element. Each separation element has an inner surface defined by a channel extending through a substrate, and a plurality of pores which derive from the inner surface and extend through the substrate. The treated slurry is passed through the separation element and the agglomerated photocatalytic particles are allowed to form a layer at or near the inner surface of the separation element. Decontaminated effluent can then be recovered through the plurality of pores of the separation element. The treated slurry is preferably degassified in a tank before it is presented to the filter unit. Further, the amounts of recovered decontaminated effluent is preferably limited based on the level of treated slurry in the tank.

Disclosed herein are systems and process integrating the chemical-free oxidation of a photocatalytic decontamination process with a biological decontamination system to eliminate the THM and HAA precursors in drinking water. In one embodiment, a system may comprise a source providing fluid media contaminated with toxic natural organic matter, and a photocatalytic decontamination subsystem configured to oxidize the toxic natural organic matter via a photocatalytic process into non-toxic natural organic matter having a molecular weight low enough for biodegrading said non-toxic matter. The system may include a biological decontamination subsystem configured to immediately receive the contaminated fluid output from the photocatalytic decontamination subsystem, and employing a biological agent to biologically degrade the low-molecular weight non-toxic natural organic matter in the contaminated fluid to a concentration sufficient to prevent the formation of trihalomethanes or haloacetic acids. Also, such a system may include a disinfectant sub-system configured to disinfect the fluid output from the biological decontamination subsystem.

The disclosed principles for providing a chemical-free filtering of particulate down below sub-micron levels, while concentrating the particulate into a sludge. The disclosed principles integrate cross-flow filtration (i.e., micro-filtration or ultra-filtration) with a settling tank (or “weir”) to provide sequential filtration and dewatering of an aqueous media. The disclosed technique operates chemical-free and is continuous. Applications for systems and processes in accordance with the disclosed technique are wide, and include aggregate fines removal, sediment removal, replacement for clarifiers, etc.

Disclosed herein are systems and methods for decontaminating a contaminated fluid that integrate ultraviolet radiation in an advanced decontamination process, and a honing material, along with a cross-flow membrane filter, into a single closed-loop system. This approach combines the advantages of chemical-free advanced decontamination technology, long-life wiper-free UV disinfections, and maintenance-free ceramic MF/UF membranes to provide multi-barrier protection. Such technique provides a 100% fluid recovery system (zero reject stream). In one embodiment, the system comprises a filtration membrane and a honing material located in the contaminated fluid that is sufficient to scrub foulants from the membrane, as well as any other components that honing material comes in contact with, while forming a dynamic filtration coating on the membrane as the contaminated fluid pass through the membrane. The system may also comprise an advanced decontamination process sufficient to destroy, by oxidation or reduction, biological and organic contaminants from the contaminated fluid.
