Apparatus for simple and precise positioning of a tool holder or like assembly on a backing structure, characterized by the tool holder and its backing structure having interfitting parts which interconnect by a sliding motion of one relative to the other. The interfitting parts include portions which provide, on contact, a precise datum control point, for location of said assembly, and other portions formed to accommodate discrepancies in the prescribed positions thereof relative said datum control point. The interfitting parts are so designed to enable a simple and automatic positioning of a tool holder or like assembly on a base support by a slip fit of one to the other.

The invention features a spring assembly the construction of which lends it particular advantage for use in forming dies, to replace conventional stripper springs. Preferred embodiments feature a spring receptacle and an interrelated cap formed to center and contain therebetween a coil spring. The cap and the receptacle are interconnected by a screw, the adjustment of which enables the adjustment in the contained length and the pre-load on the spring. In its preferred application, to replace a conventional stripper spring in a die set, the spring assembly of the invention can be so applied as to insure zero stress on the related stripper plate in the open condition of the die. The spring receptacle features a simple means to facilitate that this zero stress condition may be maintained as and when the die tools require sharpening or adjustment, which in turn requires an adjustment of the related stripper plate.

A punch, punch retainer or like assembly characterized by a uniquely applied retainer element in the form of a coiled compression spring installed in a bore to apply a spring load to a component part. The spring has a differential diameter and is differentially wound. When inserted in a bore, a portion of the spring contacts the bore wall with an expanding pressure to per se yieldingly anchor the spring in place. A spring portion lends itself to a simple winding to facilitate introduction and removal of the spring. In certain applications the spring is permitted a self-adjusting action under the influence of impact and vibration forces.

A die for use in a punch press or like equipment embodying improvements in the mount and suspension of a spring biased stripper plate. It features stripper springs endowed with a definite pre-load by virtue of a special cage assembly. The caged spring assemblies are so constructed and applied that there is absolutely no pressure on the stripper plate when the die is in an open position. In preferred embodiments of the caged spring assemblies, the open spaces between the coils of a contained spring are reduced to a dimension less than that of the thickness of the coils themselves. This prevents the coils from winding or screwing and from materially affecting the prescribed pre-load in event of spring breakage. The invention further features means to maintain the stripper spring preload constant and to preserve a constant relation of component parts of the die when adjustment of the die tools is required.

The disclosure affords die apparatus enabling that a previously set die may be taken from storage and immediately put to use in a press. In its embodiment, the disclosure employs a simple grind plug which is reformable in conjunction with the tool and die elements which are required to be adjusted in use of a die as well as with their associated feed and stock control components. The nature and arrangement is such to facilitate maintaining a constant working stroke for the die tools upon a requirement for their replacement or adjustment, and a proper frame of reference for the related work piece. The disclosure also features improved means for establishing the shut height of a die and improved means for use in guiding and controlling the positioning of stock or a work piece being fed to a die.

The invention contemplates the screw or other fastener being applied in a counterbored passage having in the wall thereof an undercut forming a groove. The retainer is here disclosed as a plate having parallel sides, rounded ends, and a central aperture. The ends are flat and co-planar while the side portions bounding the aperture are offset in the form of an inverted ''''V.'''' The retainer is dimensioned to easily set in the counterbore cavity to overlie the slotted or socketed head of the screw, whereupon its side portions are flattened to project its rounded ends to bridge the cavity and enter the groove. This retains the screw in the body to which it is applied while permitting its rotation for engaging to or disengaging from a related structure.

This is a system and apparatus for keying and locking tools and like elements such as punches and die and guide buttons in the appropriate bores of their retainers. The system requires the formation of a flat on the head end of the element to be inserted and locked in a retainer bore while the wall of the bore to position opposite the flat is drilled and reamed, in an axial sense, to provide parallel pin holes which open at one side to the bore. Each pin hole receives a dowel type pin which, however, has a flat along one side portion. The flat on the pin is positioned to be exposed to the bore and to generally face the flat on the inserted tool. The dowel pins are specially designed to include a taper which enables a preliminary non-seated positioning of the respective pins in their holes while the related tool is inserted in the associated bore, whereupon each pin is rotatively positioned as required to abut the flat on the inserted tool. The pins are then driven to a seated locking position referenced to the flat on the tool. The use of plural pins, so formed and utilized, eliminates the need for close tolerance in machining the related parts and insures a precise and simple procedure in the locking of a tool or other element in a desired orientation and place.
