Abstract:
The present invention relates to an electrostatic capacity type encoder which includes a variable capacitance mechanism made on two dimensional planes, random time varying excitation generation system, interlaced fine & coarse cycles and digital signal processing unit. A variable capacitance mechanism which includes stationary and rotating disks facing each other and forming one or more variable capacitors. The transmit electrodes are split to two transmit phases and the receive electrodes to two receive phases, both can be implemented on two dimensional printed circuit boards without third dimension via interconnects. The combination of the 2 by 2 grid provides the four combinations required to detect both position and direction. Another configuration is made of electrostatic capacity type encoder which includes a first and second stationary disks and in between a third rotating disk, made either of a dielectric material with varying geometry or thickness or from a conductive patterns printed on a PCB. A time varying excitation system with no fundamental frequency is described to improve the robustness to external noise and omit the necessacity of excessive shielding. Interlacing mechanism is explained to put several different encoders channels on the same perimeter, minimizing encoder mechanical dimensions. To complete the sensor a digital signal processing unit is presented, where the capacitance value is converted to conventional encoder formats.

A wireless communication system includes a system Infrastructure, a plurality of mobile stations and a control terminal operable to send to the mobile stations via the system infrastructure instruction signals by wireless communication relating to information the mobile stations are to store regarding wireless communications with other mobile stations in the system, wherein the information includes group membership information or data relating to communication groups of which the mobile stations are to be members and the instruction signals include an instruction relating to an order in which the group membership information or data in one or more lists of such information is to be stored by the mobile stations.
Abstract:
A method for use in a mobile communication system for estimating the location of a target mobile station (MS) which includes receiving signals from the target MS (N) at a plurality of receivers (MS1, MS2, MS3) in different locations and calculating the location of the target MS (N) from information obtained from the received signals, wherein at least one of the receivers (MS1) is a searching MS and wherein the calculation of location is carried out by the searching MS (MS1). The method may involve the target MS and the searching MS or MSs communicating by a direct mode of operation (DMO) link. The searching MSs may conveniently have GPS attachments. A mobile station which may be used as the target MS or as a searching MS and a system incorporating the same is also disclosed.
Abstract:
In a communication system, a communication unit may access increased information in the following manner. The communication unit transmits an information access request to the communication resource allocator of the communication system, wherein the information access request comprises a selection of pre-established information for that communication unit. Upon receiving the information access request, the communication resource allocator retrieves pre-established information based upon the request and transmits it to the communication unit. The communication unit temporarily stores the pre-established information and executes a system service based upon the retrieved pre-established information.
Abstract:
A multi-user radio system, such as a trunked radio system has sets of operations ("storm plans") for execution in emergency situations. A central control and management processor is arranged to define a list of users (20) associated with a respective storm plan and to permit the defined users to execute the respective storm plan.

Abstract:
A method for setting up a group call within a dispatch radio communication system is disclosed. Additional stations which are not programmed to respond to a transmitted group identification code (GIC) are enabled to join the call. The method comprises steps carried out by a service provider of (a) providing first and second additional fields in a set-up message, the first additional field carrying a Group Call Access Permission (GCAP) value and the second additional field carrying a Help Request Level (HRL) value, (b) enabling a call initiator to select a GCAP value, according to a range of stations the call initiator wishes to reach, and a HRL value, according to an assigned call priority, for transmission alongside the GIC in the step (a) fields, and (c) enabling any station that receives a set-up message to determine whether to join the call based on the GCAP and HRL values.
Abstract:
A method of X-ray analysis includes irradiating a spot on a sample with X-rays along an X-ray beam axis. X-rays emitted from the sample, responsive to irradiating the spot, are simultaneously detected at a plurality of different azimuthal angles relative to the beam axis. X-ray intensities detected at the different angles in a common energy range are compared in order to determine a property of the sample.

Abstract:
A method of operation of a radio communications system having a controller controlling communications of a plurality of communicating units on a plurality of communication channels. The method includes the steps of a first communications unit transmitting a call request (100) to the controller and the controller reserving a first communications channel for a communications unit required in the requested call. The controller allocates the first communications channel for temporary communications to other communicating units whilst waiting for the availability of a second communications channel for the requested call, wherein the second communications channel is to be allocated to a second communications unit required in the requested call. A communications system having a channel allocation controller (12) having a list of communications channels (16) with reserved indicators (18) indicative of the status of reserved communications channels.
