The jelly blocks and jelly letters may be made from an elastomer gel that is formulated for tackiness to permit stacking of the blocks or sticking of the letters to a desired surface. The blocks and letters may be soft enough that a child could be struck with them without suffering injury.

The methods can include forming a formable polymer around salt particles or other dissolvable particles, permitting the formable polymer to solidify, then reducing the salt or other dissolvable particles by use of water or a solvent or melting, leaving air pockets or voids in the formable polymer.

When the toy is squeezed, the non-liquid deformable core presses against at least a portion of the skin, making the skin thin at that point and permitting the color of the core to show through, creating the appearance of a color change of the toy.
