Abstract:
What is shown is a high purity adduct of castor oil and a cyclic carboxylic acid anhydride, charactered by the absence of free acid anhydride, which is used in personal care products. The adduct is made by a process, without side reactions, which includes (a) reacting castor oil and cyclic carboxylic acid anhydride at a temperature of 75-120° C. for 4 to 24 hours, and then (b) continuing the reaction at room temperature for at least 1 week to react any remaining maleic anhydride. Skin and hair care formulations of such adducts are also described.
Abstract:
A product-structuring composition which forms a bilayer lamellar gel network in an oil-in-water system comprising (a) a cationic swellant which is a fatty acid adduct of amidopropyldimethyl-2-hydroxyethyl ammonium halide, and (b) a gellant blend of low HLB emulsifiers having a resultant HLB of about 1.5 to 4.5.
Abstract:
A composition for retaining active ingredients in personal care compositions is described based on one or more polymers having a network structure in an oil phase in amounts from 0.01 to 10% by weight based on the total weight of the composition in the oil phase, the polymers including at least one associative agent, the composition further including at least one active component. The oil phase viscosity of each composition is at least 10 poise under a shear stress up to 1000 dynes/cm2.
Abstract:
An emulsifier composition for skin care formulations, which is present in the form of a bilayer lamellar gel network, which is stable up to a temperature of about 50.degree. C., comprising by weight, about 3-40% of a high HLB swellant which is lecithin, and a blend of low HLB emulsifier gellants, to 100%, the blend of gellants having a resultant HLB of about 1.5 to about 5. In a skin care formulation, the lamellar gel network forms a discrete third phase between the oil and water phases.
