A method of synchronizing with an uplink channel and a method of determining a propagation delay in a wireless communications system are provided. In the example method of synchronizing, a propagation delay between a target base station and a mobile station is calculated. Then, the calculated propagation delay is sent to the target base station. In the example method of determining a propagation delay, a first signal is received indicating a first measured chip offset between a downlink channel of a serving base station and a pilot signal of the target base station. A second signal indicating a second measured chip offset between an uplink channel of the mobile station and a pilot signal of the target base station is then received. A propagation delay between the target base station and the mobile station is calculated based at least in part on the first and second measured chip offsets.

Embodiments are described to address coverage difference problems in communication systems (300) that operate in multiple frequency bands. Embodiments are described that utilize both Carrier Multiplexing and Carrier Diversity for a plurality of frequency carriers that exhibit a difference in coverage due to differences in path loss. Carrier Diversity is selected for carriers for which one or more of such selected carriers have a smaller coverage in order to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of the diversity combined carriers. This can effectively extend the coverage of diversity combined carriers to match those with larger coverage in Carrier Multiplexing mode.

For example, one method involves determining that user equipment (UE) is located in a far zone of a transceiver node's coverage area and then determining a timing advance value for the UE such that a transmission from the UE will be received at the transceiver node one slot period after a transmission of a near zone UE assigned to the same HARQ process.
