Abstract: A cigarette making machine includes a channel (10; 100; 204) through which tobacco is pneumatically conveyed to form a cigarette filler stream (15; 209) on a conveyor (12; 130; 220) at the outlet of the channel, a first louvre (20; 110; 214) through which some of the air entering the channel through its inlet end is drawn from the channel while tobacco continues towards the conveyor, and a second louvre (22; 120; 216), closer than the first louvre to the outlet end of the channel, through which an additional amount of the air entering the channel is drawn while the tobacco continues towards the conveyor. The channel (202) may be arranged to extend around a cylinder with an inclined axis (208) so that upward movement of the tobacco is converted into approximately horizontal movement with a substantial component in the direction of movement of the conveyor (200) on which the tobacco collects to form a cigarette filler stream (209).

Abstract: In the production of filter cigarettes by a process in which the tobacco sections and filter portions are united while moving in an axial direction, the wrapper sections are resiliently pressed onto the abutting tobacco sections and filter portions, preferably by resilient pads. The pads are carried by a suction conveyor and their spacing may be adjusted by means for changing their timing or path length, to suit different lengths of tobacco sections and filter portions. The tobacco sections and filter portions may be assembled on a suction conveyor adapted to allow axial adjustment of the position of a conveyed article following slight lateral displacement of the article to reduce the suction grip of the conveyor.

Abstract: An apparatus for pneumatically feeding tobacco to a number of cigarette making machines having a plurality of conveyors. The conveyors feed tobacco onto a circular feed table where the tobacco is distributed to each of the cigarette machines. The table is arranged to convey the tobacco along a circular path around the vertical central axis of the table. The apparatus further includes a number of suction pipes which are circumferentially spaced with respect to the table and are arranged to pick up tobacco for delivery to respective cigarette making machines. Each cigarette making machine has a hopper for accumulating tobacco including detectors for detecting the quantity of accumulated tobacco. In addition, there is a drive mechanism associated with each pipe for moving each pipe substantially radially with respect to the table to control the rate at which tobacco is picked up from the table. Such control is responsive to the detectors.

Abstract: A cigarette making machine comprises an air previous band, a channel through which tobacco is showered towards the band with the aid of an air stream to form a cigarette filler stream on the band, the air stream being induced at least partly by suction acting through the band to hold the tobacco against the band, whereby there is also suction pressure in the channel at the end adjacent to the band, characterized by a partly-tubular casing which covers the cigarette filler stream as it leaves the shower channel, and inclined air inlets which are arranged to introduce air streams into the part-tubular casing direction having components in the direction of the cigarette filler stream.

Abstract: Apparatus for applying fluid additive to a stream of fibrous material such as a filter tow. The apparatus provides structure for blowing air into the filter tow during or immediately after the application of the fluid additive, a plasticiser; this foams and distributes the plasticiser in the tow. Air may be delivered from a porous plate closely adjacent to the path of the tow or from nozzles in an air injecting unit. Alternatively air may be used to foam plasticiser at a location remote from the tow and foamed plasticiser subsequently conveyed to and into the tow by a roller.

Abstract: A cigarette making machine includes a chimney (12, 14) and means (10) for projecting tobacco in a direction transverse to the chimney, from which direction lighter particles of tobacco tend to be deflected upwards into the chimney by an upwardly flowing air stream while heavier particles continue past the lower end of the chimney directly towards a projector roller (26) which is arranged to project the heavier particles downwards at a controlled velocity and in a controlled direction (inclined to the vertical) into a duct (30) through which at least part of the air entering the chimney flows upwards. Abstract: Apparatus for treating filter material, particularly a filter tow for forming into a cigarette filter rod, includes an applicator chamber containing a rotatable brush for spraying a fluid additive such as a plasticizer towards the tow. A pressure manifold having a permeable surface adjacent the path of the tow produces an air flow which redirects towards the tow of plasticizer not captured initially by the tow. Air supplied to the manifold passes through an air ionization region, to reduce static electricity in the chamber. Air is withdrawn from the chamber by a pump to prevent a pressure build-up which could cause loss of uncaptured plasticizer. A separator is provided for collecting any plasticizer entrained with the extracted air and for returning it to a supply tank.
