    摘要: A shock absorber for a marine propulsion device is configured to provide an adapter, coupler and resilient device which can be assembled into a unit, or module, that can be inserted into a propeller. The resilient device includes two helical springs that urge the coupler into a central position with respect to the adapter and resist relative axial motion between the adapter and coupler. The shock absorber is intended to absorb the forces which occur during a shift from neutral to forward gear of the marine propulsion device.

    摘要: A marine propulsion system is provided with inner and outer bellows, or tubes, which are rigidly attached to both the transom bracket and the driveshaft housing of the sterndrive system. Neither the inner nor outer tubes rotate with the driveshaft. Both the inner and outer tubes, or bellows, allow the driveshaft to rotate relative to the transom bracket about either a steering axis or trim axis. An exhaust passage is defined between the outer surface of the inner tube and the inner surface of the outer tube. This structure provides an efficient positioning of the two tubes while protecting the universal joint within the inner tube from the exhaust gases. Encompassing the inner tube within the outer tube increases the possible area that can be used for the exhaust passage in comparison to providing two individual tubes, one for the universal joint and the other as an exhaust passage.

A steering handle is attached to the support structure and the steering handle is rotatable within a range about an axis. A driveshaft housing is attached to the internal combustion engine and a driveshaft is supported within the housing. The apparatus can be raised or lowered relative to a bracket which comprises a support cylinder. The steering handle is adjustable within a range of travel and the entire marine apparatus can be raised or lower to accommodate various different types of marine vessels.

The midsection housing includes an oil sump in one embodiment and further includes an exhaust passage partially encircled by cooling water and partially encircled by engine oil for muffling engine exhaust noise. The midsection housing also has an oil drain arrangement providing complete and clean oil draining while the outboard drive is mounted on a boat and in the water wherein the operator can change oil without leaving the confines of the boat and entering the water.

    摘要: In a two cycle internal combustion engine having three cylinders vertically in-line, a single intake manifold (210) services all three of the cylinders, and a single fuel delivery device on the manifold has a throttle bore (128a) at the uppermost reed block opening (204) and spaced above the other reed block openings (206, 208). The bottotm (220) of the throttle bore is spaced slightly above the bottom (222) of the uppermost reed block opening. A flow divider dam (228) in the manifold is below the uppermost reed block opening and a first portion (216) of the throttle bore, and divides the flow from the throttle bore and diverts to the upper cylinder a portion of the gravitationally induced vertical fuel flow which would otherwise drain to the lower cylinder during engine idle.

    摘要: Intake air to the carburetor of a two-cycle engine is preheated by ducting ambient temperature outside air past hot engine surfaces. Preferably, a portion of the intake air duct includes a heat exchanger formed integrally with the outer wall of the engine exhaust manifold. The use of heated intake air enhances idle and low speed operation of the engine by reducing or eliminating fuel puddling and by narrowing the temperature range used for carburetor calibration.

    摘要: An actuator for a marine transmission uses four cavities of preselected size in order to provide four potential forces resulting from pressurized hydraulic fluid within those cavities. The effective areas of surfaces acted upon by the hydraulic pressure are selected in order to provide increased force to move the actuator toward a neutral position from either a forward or reverse gear position. Also, the relative magnitudes of these effective areas are also selected to provide a quicker movement into gear than out of gear, given a similar differential magnitude of pressures within the cavities.
