A rolling line for the production of flat product includes a casting machine to continuously case a thin slab, a temperature maintenance and homogenization unit, a rolling unit a forming stand or roughing stand connected to the exit of the casting machine to reduce the thickness of the slab. The forming stand or roughing stand is configured to perform an adaptive reduction of the thickness of the cast slab smaller than or equal to about 65% at least as a function of the thickness, width and type of material of the finished flat product. The rolling unit is configured to perform a reduction of the reduction of the thin slab coming from the temperature maintenance and homogenization unit to a thickness comprised between about 1.2 mm and about 20 mm by three or fewer double rolling passes through the double rolling stand.

The method provides that the thin slab is disposed, for example, sheared to size, upstream of the maintenance and/or possible heating step in order to form a segment of slab having a length equivalent, in weight, greater than that of a coil, and that, already after the first rolling pass in the reversing rolling mill (14), the thickness of the segment of slab is reduced to a value in the range of 20-25 mm so as to render it windable on the reel furnace (16b) downstream of the stand (15).

A temperature maintenance and/or possible heating apparatus for long products, continuously cast and sheared to size by means of shearing means so as to define segments of bloom, said apparatus being disposed between a casting machine having a first casting line and a second casting line, and a rolling line disposed downstream of the casting machine in order to make long rolled metal products. The apparatus comprises a first furnace, a second furnace and a transit tunnel. The first furnace is provided with a first introduction rollerway to introduce the bloom segments, disposed aligned with said first casting line, a removal rollerway, aligned with said rolling line and suitable to render the bloom segments available to said rolling line, and transverse transfer devices to transfer the bloom segments from the first introduction rollerway to the removal rollerway. The second furnace is disposed upstream with respect to said first furnace, provided with a second introduction rollerway to introduce the bloom segments, disposed aligned with said second casting line, an exit rollerway aligned with the removal rollerway and suitable to convey the bloom segments toward said removal rollerway and transverse transfer devices suitable to transfer the bloom segments from the second introduction rollerway toward the exit rollerway. The transit tunnel is located aligned with said first casting line, adjacent and parallel to the longitudinal extension of the second furnace and upstream of said first furnace, conformed to transport the cast bloom segments from said first casting line toward the first introduction rollerway of the first furnace.

This invention is an electric arc furnace that can be continuously charged with ferrous materials, that can continuously melt the incoming charged materials, and that can semicontinuously tap molten steel by tilting to tap one side of the furnace or another. Continuous melting and refining can occur in lateral shafts adjacent to the central melting zone, and molten steel can be tapped from either of these shafts or directly from the central melting zone if desired. The furnace can be operated and tapped continuously, which provides many distinct advantages over what is currently available in the art.
