The electrode shielding member when in the retracted position permits the center and peripheral electrodes to be electrically engaged with the center and peripheral contact points in the lamp mouthpiece when the electrode shielding member is moved to the retracted position, but the electrode shielding member when in the projected position substantially conceals the center and peripheral electrodes.

An improved inverter AC power supply includes a chopper providing a DC voltage from an AC source voltage and an inverter providing from the DC voltage a high frequency AC voltage to a load. The chopper incorporates a pair of first and second switching elements operating to turn on and off for obtaining a periodically interrupted AC voltage which is rectified and smoothened to provide the DC voltage to the inverter. The inverter is arranged to share the first and second switching elements in common to the chopper, and operates to drive the same switching elements for switching the DC voltage in order to provide a desired AC voltage to the load. The power supply is provided with an input power sensor monitoring an input power supplied to the chopper and an output power sensor monitoring an output power from the inverter to the load. A power controller is included for varying at least one of a switching frequency and a duty ratio for the first and second switching elements in accordance with the monitored chopper input power and inverter output power for equalizing the input and output powers.

The driver circuit includes a current control circuit for receiving an input signal from a power source and providing a current output for powering the LED. A voltage sensor detects a voltage across the LED. An LED current restriction circuit such as a switching element restricts a current flow into the LED. A short circuit response circuit controls the LED current restriction circuit dependent on a comparison between the voltage detected by the voltage sensor and a predetermined threshold value. When the detected voltage is less than or equal to the threshold value, the response circuit determines a short circuit, and a signal is sent to the current restriction circuit to restrict current flow into the one or more LEDs.

A safety ballast for a discharge lamp capable of interrupting the supply of the electric power upon failure of starting the lamp. The ballast includes a converter providing a DC power voltage from a DC voltage source, a booster providing a boosted DC voltage to a starter which generates, based upon the boosted DC voltage, a starting voltage for starting the lamp, and an inverter receiving the DC power from the converter to provide an AC power for operating the lamp. The booster includes a capacitor which is charged by the DC power and accumulate the boosted voltage. A controller monitors a load condition of the lamp and issues a disable signal when a no-load condition continues over a predetermined starting period. The inverter includes a plurality of switching elements one of which is regulated to be turned on in response to the no-load signal for establishing a supply path of supplying the boosted voltage from the booster's capacitor through the switching element to the starter. The one switching element is also controlled to be turned off in response to the disable signal for interrupting the supply path. Thus, when the no-load condition continues over the predetermined starting period as indicative of the that the lamp has been removed or the lamp reaching its end of life, the booster's capacitor bearing the boosted voltage is disconnected from the starter, applying no voltage to the starter and therefore preventing the starter from being activated to generate unnecessary starting voltage.
