The electrostatic latent image developer comprises a resin-coated magnetic carrier and a toner. Said resin-coated magnetic carrier consists of a magnetic ferrite carrier core and a coating layer formed thereon by polymerizing a high molecular weight polyethylene resin directly on the surface of said carrier core. Said toner does not contain polyethylene wax but polypropylene wax and/or polyester wax having an average molecular weight of 10,000 as the wax component or components in an amount of from 0.1 to 20 wt. %.

A magnetic carrier for use in a developer for developing latent electrostatic images is composed of magnetic carrier particles with a particle size of 35 .mu.m or less in an amount of 15 wt. % or more, and a developer is composed of the above carrier and a toner. An image formation method is composed of the steps of (a) uniformly charging the surface of a photoconductor to a predetermined polarity, (b) forming latent electrostatic images including low potential portions and high potential portions on the photoconductor by subjecting the charged surface of the photoconductor to selective light radiation corresponding to light images, thereby selectively reducing the potential of the surface of the photoconductor, and (c) developing the thus formed latent electrostatic images to visible toner images by bringing the developer into contact with the latent-electrostatic-images-bearing photoconductor.

A low cost image forming apparatus can be provided in which the amount of remaining toner of each color in each development apparatus can be detected by a single detection sensor device and at the same time whether the development apparatus is attached to or detached from the image forming apparatus can be discerned by the detection sensor device. The image forming apparatus includes development apparatuses for each color for developing an electrostatic latent image and supply of the developer is controlled based on the detected amount of toner in each of the development apparatuses. The detection sensor device includes a light emitting member and a light receiving member which receives the light emitted from the light emitting member and output a detection signal in accordance with the intensity of received light. Each of the development apparatuses has a light path member or members and the light emitted from the light emitting member advances through the light path member or members in which the light is formed into a light different in pattern with respect to each development apparatus. Therefore, the development apparatus brought to the developing position can be discerned and the amount of toner in the development apparatus can be determined based on the detection signal, thereby supply of developer to the development apparatus is controlled.

This makes it possible to prevent central voids in a black-line image. In a black-line image transferred onto a transfer medium by this full-color image forming apparatus, not only are central voids eliminated, but degradation of image quality is also prevented.
