    Abstract: Disclosed herein is a forward osmosis module for concentration and/or crystallization salts from an aqueous feed solution, the feed solution including seeds that surround an open semi-permeable membrane having free membrane portions forming an enclosure with a distribution pipe that introduces draw solution inside said enclosure. The feed solution penetrates into the enclosure as permeate from the feed side of the membrane to the draw solution side according to a Forward Osmosis process based on net driving pressure. The draw solution with permeate is evacuated from the enclosure via an outlet. A generator applies, at least periodically, a plurality of directional gauge pressure strokes PGs, directed from at least one of the draw solution inlet and outlet thereby effecting mechanical shaking of the free membrane portions for detachment of foulant.

    Abstract: Locally backwashing portions of filter media allows a simple and effective design of intake and pretreatment units, as well as their integration. An enclosure is used to limit portions of filter media and backwash them locally by suction, utilizing filtered water from adjacent filter media as the back wash water. Wastewater is produced at small amounts that allows efficient sludge treatment. This design enables water pretreatment at the intake unit, simplifying overall plant design and preventing damage to organisms living outside the intake unit.

    Abstract: A sea water intake system comprising a main sea water intake pipe, one end of the sea water intake pipe being provided with a centrifugal chamber, the chamber having at least one tangential inlet for entry of sea water to cause rotation of the sea water in the chamber. The other end of the intake pipe terminates in a sump, the sump having a water level lower than that of sea level and having a pump to transport sea water from the sump through a delivery pipe to a treatment plant. A central region of the centrifugal chamber is in fluid communication with a substantially vertical airlift pipe having an air inlet at, or close, to the chamber and a water exit remote from the chamber.
