A compact antenna for circular polarization comprises a substrate of a dielectric material which is formed on its bottom surface with a ground plane and on its top surface with four planar rectangular patches of an electrically conductive material. The four patches are mounted in a coplanar relation on the top surface of the substrate, and arranged along four sides of a square pattern with the length of each patch angled at 90.degree. with respect to the length of the two adjacent patches. Each of the four patches is short-circuited to the ground plane at a shorting point located at a corner of the square pattern. A 90.degree. hybrid circuit is connected to directly feed only the two adjacent patches with a phase difference of 90.degree. to thereby define these two patches as active antenna elements which are fed with 0.degree. and 90.degree. signals, respectively. The other two adjacent patches are not fed from the hybrid circuit to define parasitic antenna elements each coupled with the adjacent active antenna element to provide a signal which is 90.degree. out of phase with a signal on the adjacent active antenna element. Thus, the active and parasitic antenna elements arranged in one direction around the substrate are fed at 0.degree., 90.degree., 180.degree., and 270.degree. phases for circular polarization only with the use of a single hybrid circuit.

A small broadband monopole antenna having a perpendicular ground plane with an electromagnetically coupled feed is provided. The small broadband monopole antenna may be realized as a small antenna having a size of 0.085λ0×0.085λ0×0.085λ0 by positioning a folded strip line under a shorted square disc. A resonance of the shorted square disc may be coupled to a resonance of the square folded strip line so as to form a wide bandwidth of about 36.6% of a central frequency of 2.313 GHz based on a VSWR≦2. Also, rectangular slits may be inserted into the perpendicular ground plane to improve a distortion of a radiation pattern that forms on the perpendicular ground plane so as to reduce a backward radiation by 3 dBi or more. The small broadband monopole antenna exhibits a forward radiation pattern similar to that of a general monopole antenna and has a gain of about 2.6 dBi within a bandwidth.

Disclosed is a multiple meander strip monopole antenna, which can have a broad bandwidth and easily miniaturize the antenna by using a meander structure. A grounding conductor plate is coupled to the under face of a dielectric base plate. A radial cross-strip is disposed symmetrically at the center of the upper surface of the dielectric base plate. Each radiating member of a multiple radiator is connected to the end portion of each corresponding branch of the radial cross-strip and stands substantially perpendicular to the base plate. Each radiating member is composed of a vertical strip section having a tapered structure, in which its width is progressively widened upwardly for an impedance matching and at least one meander strip section connected integrally to the upper end of the vertical strip section. When a feeding is carried out at the center of the radial cross-strip, a signal radiated from the multiple radiator is cancelled out in the axial direction of θ=0° and a radiation gain is increased as θ increases, thereby providing a conical beam radiation pattern. A broad bandwidth from 2.9 GHz to 10.85 GHz can be achieved and an excellent monopole radiation pattern having the same gain in all directions can also be achieved.
