摘要: Compatibility information embedded in an optical medium modifies actions allowed by predetermined non-compatible optical disc drives on the optical medium, such as optical disc drives that may suffer damage if certain actions are performed on the optical medium. For instance, a compatibility engine of the optical disc drive applies compatibility information read from an optical medium to determine restrictions to impose on the use of the optical medium, such as restricting the optical disc drive from writing to the optical medium, reading from the optical medium or performing any operations until an update to the optical disc drive firmware is performed either automatically or by display of a compatibility user interface at an information handling system associated with the optical disc drive. In one embodiment, the compatibility information identifies incompatible optical disc drives and firmware versions by unique identifiers.

摘要: Expiration information stored on an optical medium is applied to determine an expiration date of the optical medium that provides a predetermined reliability of information archived on the optical medium, such as a predetermined acceptable defect level of the information at the expiration date. An expiration engine associated with an information handling system or optical disc drive determines the expiration date from one or more factors, such as the manufacture date of read-only optical media, the initialization date of recordable optical media, a quality rating associated with a defect growth rate over time of the optical media, and a desired reliability. In one embodiment, the expiration engine writes expiration information to the optical media, such as a date stamp at initialization of a recordable optical medium. Alternatively, an expiration date is stored on an information handling system to provide expiration warnings a predetermined time before the expiration date.

摘要: A next generation of high-speed CD-RW discs for high-speed recording (4x-10x) needs a new write strategy, which is not suited for recording at lower speeds (1x-4x). Existing CD-RW recorders may accept these discs and make recordings according to existing write strategies. This will result in unreadable discs. To prevent this, a Power Calibration Area (PCA) and a Program Memory Area (PMA), both needed for recording, are hidden for the existing recorders. As a result the disc will be rejected. In a method wherein an absolute time reference (ATIP) is applied on the disc, the start locations of these areas being determined by a fixed time offset relative to a subsequent Lead-in area, the PCA and PMA are made untraceable by introducing and Absolute Time in Pre-Groove (ATIP) time code jump of, for instance, one minute just before the Start time of the Lead-in area. Alternatively, the absolute Time in Pre-Groove (ATIP) time code jumps are introduced between a Test Area and a Count Area of the program calibration area (PCA).

摘要: Running time is registered on an information carrier that includes main data and subcode data. The running time is indicated in a subcode channel by a subcode time expressed in accordance with a predetermined format. A pseudo-running time is described by incrementing the subcode time in accordance with a pseudo-tempo, which is different from an actual tempo, the actual tempo representing a tempo in accordance with the actual running time.

摘要: A method of digitally recording information on a suitable medium, particularly a CD is described, in which method a recording is made during a recording session. The recording includes a program portion with the information to be recorded. Prior to recording the program portion, a predetermined number of run-in blocks is recorded, and subsequent to recording the program portion, a predetermined number of run-out blocks is recorded. During the recording session, an identification code identifying the recording apparatus used for the relevant recording session is recorded on the medium. The identification code is recorded in at least one of the run-in blocks and run-out blocks. This provides the possibility of recording a full identification code, even in the case of relatively short recordings.

摘要: A system for block encoding words of a digital signal achieves a maximum of error compaction and ensures reliability of a self-clocking decoder, while minimizing any DC in the encoded signal. Data words of m bits are translated into information blocks of n.sub.1 bits (n.sub.1 >m) that satisfy a (d,k)-constraint in which at least d "0" bits, but no more than k "0" bits occur between successive "1" bits. The information blocks are catenated by inserting separation blocks of n.sub.2 bits therebetween, selected so that the (d,k)-constraint is satisfied over the boundary between any two information words. For each information word, the separation block that will yield the lowest net digital sum value is selected. Then, the encoded signal is modulated as an NRZ-M signal in which a "1" becomes a transition and a "0" becomes an absence of a transition. A unique synchronizing block is inserted periodically. A decoder circuit, using the synchronizing blocks to control its timing, disregards the separation blocks, but detects the information blocks and translates them back into reconstituted data words of m bits. The foregoing technique can be used to advantage in recording digitized music on an optical disc.

摘要: A data stream is received from a medium. This stream consists of synchronization words and data words. The synchronization words are either identical or one the inverse of the other when they are correctly received. Between two synchronization words a fixed number of n data words is present. The information received is always consecutively stored in a buffer memory. The buffer memory has connected to it a detection device for generating an instantaneous synchronization signal by way of a majority decision on at least three correctly received synchronization words. Preferably, the buffer memory is a shift register comprising a data output which is situated approximately 1/2n data words +1/2 synchronization word beyond the center of the shift register when n has an even value.
