    摘要: A communications network comprises a plurality of stations which can communicate via a ring. Information is transmitted from one station to another in message blocks which circulate around the ring. The message blocks include control bits and a protocol is employed which ensures that no one station can monopolize the available message blocks. Also described is a technique which allows each station independently to assess the current spare capacity of the network. A link multiplexer may be used in conjunction with rings and incorporates a similar protocol. It provides access to a link to queues of message blocks provided queue thresholds have not been reached.

    摘要: A system for automatically clamping and unclamping objects into a carrousel having a plurality of incrementally movable carriers which support slidable trays, includes arms for unclamping a slide preventing detent and a foot for gripping the trays and sliding the trays away from the carrousel. An unclamping mechanism unclamps the objects so they can be removed form the trays. The tray is incremented to an unloaded position and a probe verifies the absence of an object. The tray then increments to a load position where another object is loaded into the tray and the clamps are automatically closed.

    摘要: A device for thumping and flushing a kinescope funnel includes a lift member which moves horizontally to engage the funnel and then vertically to raise the funnel to a thump position. A means for centering and orienting the neck moves in unison with the lift member. A thumper is arranged to thump the funnel in the thump position. A probe vertically moves to enter the funnel through the neck and inject a flushing fluid into the funnel while thumping occurs.

    摘要: A bidirectional broadband and telephony network is controllable from an exchange or head end of the network. An optical fiber (16 ) carries the telephone services to customers' premises (30, 31) via passive optical splitters (17, 18). Telephony is provided on one wavelength, broadcast TV on a second wavelength, and bidirectional asynchronous time division information on another wavelength using ATD techniques. Time-slots are allocated for information packets so they can travel without interference to and from receiving stations and the round trip delay between stations is adjusted to achieve this whilst maintaining minimum bandwidth requirements. Dynamic allocation of spare capacity is provided for bursty services.

    摘要: A packet network node and method of operating a packet network node are disclosed. Conventional packet network nodes react to congestion in the packet network by dropping packets in a manner which is perceived by users to be indiscriminate. In embodiments of the present invention, communication sources precede communications with a start packet which contains a communication identifier also carried within subsequent packets of the communication. The packet network node makes an entry in a vulnerable communications table (6.4) on receipt of such a start packet. After an amount of time, and often before the cessation of a communication, such entries are removed from the vulnerable communications table. On the onset of congestion, the packet network node disclosed herein deletes packets in communications identified in the vulnerable communications table. This provides a congestion alleviation method which is less annoying to users since communications that have been in existence for longer are less susceptible to component packets being deleted.
