摘要: A method and apparatus for an electromagnetic acoustic transducer. An apparatus comprises a conductive material and a current inducer. The conductive material is configured to generate a magnetic field, wherein the magnetic field has magnetic flux lines that are substantially fixed and the conductive material has a temperature that is equal to or less than a critical temperature at which the conductive material has substantially zero electrical resistance. The current inducer is configured to cause an electric current to flow in a test object that interacts with the magnetic field, wherein the electric current has a frequency that generates an acoustic wave in the test object.

摘要: There is provided an apparatus and method for making a glass preform with nanofiber reinforcement. The apparatus comprises a container for melting one or more glass components in a mixture comprising the glass components and one or more nanofibers. The container has an opening that allows escape of any gas released from the glass components when the glass components are melted in the container. The apparatus further comprises one or more heating elements for heating the container. The apparatus further comprises one or more electric field devices, positioned exterior to the glass components, that create an electric field in a volume of the mixture in order to orient the nanofibers within the glass components when the glass components are melted in the container.

摘要: An apparatus for killing insects, the apparatus including one or more host targets for attracting flying insects using one or a combination of ultraviolet light, halogen light, heat, and chemical sensory emissions attractive to flying insects; upper and lower housings connected in a manner to establish a vertical separation to accommodate an air column open to the atmosphere; and one or more insect capture assemblies located to receive the air current having a mesh or other means dimensioned to separate insects from the air current of the air column. The air column is generated by one or more air current generators in the upper and/or lower assemblies to produce a uniform air current open to the atmosphere and flowing vertically at an increased relative speed to the atmosphere thereby creating a zone of differential pressure where the pressure is lowest at the interface between the air column and the atmosphere and increases to atmospheric pressure radially at a distance away from the air column. The differential pressure urges insects into the air column for entrapment into the capture assembly.

摘要: In one embodiment, a switch includes first and second mated substrates defining therebetween a number of cavities. A plurality of wettable elements are exposed within one or more of the cavities. A switching fluid is held within one or more of the cavities. The switching fluid serves to connect and disconnect at least a pair of the plurality of wettable elements in response to forces that are applied to the switching fluid. A gas is also held within one or more of the cavities. The gas is provided to react with oxides on or in the cavities. An actuating fluid is held within one or more of the cavities and applies the forces to the switching fluid. Methods of making such a switch are also disclosed.

摘要: A method for making an improved pressure sensitive adhesive coated laminate is disclosed. The method involves coating a sheet having a release surface thereon with a pressure sensitive adhesive to form a laminate, drying or curing the pressure sensitive adhesive and marrying the laminate to the inner surface of a facing layer. A material comprising a mixture of substantially water-insoluble and adhesive incompatible polysiloxane (i) and water soluble and adhesive compatible polysiloxane (ii) is included so as to produce a low zero-minute peel value in the pressure sensitive adhesive layer and is intimately mixed with the pressure sensitive adhesive prior to the adhesive being coated on the release surface of the sheet. The resulting laminate can be easily applied to a substrate and removed and repositioned or straightened, if necessary, and provides a superior increase in peel value over a period of time to produce a more permanent installation. The laminate is suitable for use as decorative and/or protective covering as well as adhesive tapes, labels, and the like.
