摘要: A combination of silicon processing technology advances and increased understanding of the mechanisms underlying phosphene generation in human retinas by surface electrical stimulation has now made it possible to conceive of a chronically implantable retinal prosthesis for the blind which will restore some useful vision to patients over at least several degrees of their former field of view. These thin, strong, and flexible epiretinal devices are constructed of or encapsulated in known biocompatible materials which will have a long working life in the eye's saline environment. The function of the implants is to electrically stimulate the ganglion cell layer at the surface of the retina using controlled current sources. Due to the exceptionally low mass of the implant and its flexible, nearly planar form, patient discomfort and fluid drag caused by the implant minimized. These physical atttributes also substantially reduce the potential of harm to the most delicate structure of the eye, the retina, and therefore enhance the long term safety and biocompatibility of the device. Since no micro-cables are required to be attached to the device, and its overall form and edges are rounded, the device is not expected to stress the retina during chronic implantation. A provision is also made for nutrients to reach the retinal cells underneath the device to assure their long-term health.

摘要: Disclosed is a communication server that includes a message transfer unit that transfers messages sent between a first user communicating under a first communication system and a second user communicating under a second communication system. For example, the communication systems could each comprise a plurality of mobile wireless transceivers and a plurality of land-based transceivers that are used by emergency-response organizations. These communication systems may be incapable of communicating directly with each other. The communication server also includes a translator connected to the message transfer unit. The translator translates messages sent from the first communication system into a format compatible with the second communication system and vice versa. The communication server also has a voice-over-Internet-protocol (VoIP) unit connected to the message transfer unit, so that messages are transmitted through the communication server in a VoIP format. Thus, messages are transferred between the communication systems using discrete Internet protocol addresses.

摘要: Transition metal compositions which are the products of reacting a transition metal complex of the formula RmMXp with a substantially inert matrix material having a hydroxylic surface which is free from adsorbed water, wherein M is a transition metal of Groups IVA to VIA, R is a hydrocarbon group, X is a monovalent ligand and m and p are integers, m having a value from 2 to the highest valency of the metal M and p having a value of from 0 to 2 less than the valency of the metal M, except when M is a metal of Group VIA, when p is 0. When present, ligand X is preferably halogen. The compositions are useful as initiators, particularly for the polymerization of olefinically unsaturated monomers, for example ethylene and propylene.
