The apparatus includes a plurality of stations wherein the redrawing is accomplished in the first instance with a tapered punch and straight walled die and in the second instance with a tapered punch and tapered die.

    摘要: An integrated system and apparatus for completely forming the body of a two-piece can in one press, including performing the operations of cupping, drawing, redrawing, bottom profiling, and trimming. The system includes the concept of performing all of the operations required to form the body of a two-piece can in one press and includes feeding the precoated stock material, either in the form of sheet or coil, through a lubricator and into a feeding apparatus which, in turn, selectively feeds sufficient quantities of the stock material into a press. The press carries the double die necessary to perform the typical blanking and cupping operation and passes the cups out of the press in two lanes onto cup conveyors which feed them back into the press whereupon the draw-redraw dies on both sides of the cup die perform the additional steps of first redraw, second redraw, bottom profile, and trimming. The formed containers are then conveyed to secondary processing stations such as beaders, testers, or palletizers. In this fashion, a complete can body can be formed cheaply and economically without the normal expense of conventional forming mechanism.

    摘要: A method of controlling the spacing between a material forming punch and a complemental die includes advancing a punch shell and a pressure sleeve into engagement with the material and holding the material with the sleeve and blanking it with the punch shell. The material is then preliminarily formed by clamping the periphery between the pressure sleeve and a die core ring and advancing a punch core past the top of the die core ring and clamping the material against a die core to establish the desired dimension. The material is then finally formed by further advancement of the punch core with the die core and die core ring moving together. The apparatus includes a die core and die core ring which are concentrically arranged and independently supported but movable into engagement with each other after a predetermined amount of travel so as to move together through any further travel caused by movement of a punch core against the die core.

    摘要: A method of forming a container in one or more double acting presses includes the steps of blanking, drawing an inverted cup and reverse drawing the inverted cup while retaining a flange thereon at a first station and then transferring the cup to a second station where the cup is drawn to an inverted configuration and then reverse drawn to form a finished container again retaining the flange throughout. The drawing operations at each station are performed in a single stroke of the press. The apparatus at the first station includes a blank and draw punch and a fixed, hollow die core ring with the punch telescoping over the ring to form the inverted cup and a draw horn telescoping within the ring to reverse draw the cup. The apparatus at the second station includes a hollow redraw sleeve and a pressure sleeve telescoping over the redraw sleeve to invert the cup and a profile punch telescoping within the redraw sleeve to reverse draw the cup.

    摘要: Method and apparatus for forming end closures for containers complete with a peripheral curl for attachment to the top of a container without press modification includes a unique split die core ring. The method includes performing the operations of blanking the end panel against the cut edge, forming the chuckwall against the die core ring with a punch and punch shell and finally setting the chuckwall by wiping over the radius of the die core ring against a fluidly supported piston and simultaneously applying a curl to the peripheral edge of the panel prior to completion and removal from the press station. The method is performed by utilization of a split die core ring having inner and outer concentric segments, the outer segment of which is withdrawn as the punch shell advances to initiate a curl between the inner face of the punch shell and the outer face of the fixed inner segment of the die core ring. The apparatus for carrying out the method includes a conventional double acting press with a punch core on the inner slide, a punch shell on the outer slide and a die core on the fixed base. A split die core ring is employed on the fixed base and comprises a fixed inner ring and movable outer ring. The inner and outer rings are designed so as to effectively operate as a single ring during the initial forming operation. During the curl forming operation, however, the punch shell moves the outer portion of the split die core ring out of the way and forms the curl in the peripheral edge surface of the closure in the space vacated thereby.

    摘要: A system for forming unitary containers from flat metal stock includes a unique arrangement of both previously known and newly discovered apparatus, including means for blanking and cupping the flat metal stock into individual cups; means for drawing and redrawing the cups and bottom profiling them in one machine; and additional means for trimming, flanging, and beading the containers thus drawn. The system and method include, among other things, the utilization of apparatus which permits drawing, redrawing, and bottom profiling to take place in one press. This is accomplished by carrying draw, redraw, and bottom profile tooling in a single press and by inserting the cups in the press for the draw operation and then removing them and reinserting them for the redraw and bottom profile operations. The apparatus which makes it possible to perform the method in this fashion includes draw tooling; a first accumulator/divider table for feeding cups into the press and into the draw tooling; redraw and bottom profiling tooling; further apparatus for transferring the drawn cups from the press to a second accumulator/divider table and back into the press for the redraw and bottom profile operations. A further unique feature of the present system and apparatus is the disposition of the draw and redraw tooling within the press in alternating, balanced condition so that, in cooperation with the second accumulator/divider table, the press is at all times provided with a balanced load.

    摘要: A double action draw press having inner and outer rams reciprocal with respect to a fixed base for forming two piece containers such as beverage or food containers from metal sheet stock. The apparatus includes a pressure system carried by the outer ram and adapted to hold the material during the drawing operation. The apparatus also includes a drawing horn secured to the inner ram and movable independently of the pressure sleeve system. The drawing horn has an inwardly directed recess in its outboard end which communicates with an internal air passage leading to a source of air pressure. This structure permits air pressure to be applied to the interior surfaces of the drawn container as the press opens to move it out of the press for further processing. The horn is capable of being rotated about its longitudinal axis and fixed in any desired position so that this air passage is capable of being precisely directed whereby the air applied to the container will direct the container in a predetermined direction.

    摘要: A method for the high reduction of metal during a forming operation includes placing the metal blank being formed under compression by applying pressure to its peripheral edge surfaces and simultaneously engaging it with a drawing horn. The apparatus employed in the method includes a draw pad and a draw horn carried by the movable member or platen of a press and a die carried by the base of the press with the platen being movable toward and away from the base. The base also carries a matrix which carries a plurality of iris plates which are arranged in a circular fashion around a central axis of the die and which are adapted to move toward and away from the vertical center axis of the die so as to be moved into engagement with the peripheral edge surfaces of the blank as the press is brought to a closed position and the draw horn engages the blank. In this fashion, the blank is placed under radial compression simultaneously with being subjected to forming pressure by the draw horn to facilitate an extremely high percentage reduction of the metal.
