摘要: An intravenous heat exchange catheter and/or an external cooling pad/bladder can be used to maintain hypothermia in, e.g., a cardiac arrest patient, but to accelerate the cooling process the patient first can be infused with cold saline before the opportunity arises to connect the catheter or pad to the patient.

摘要: A method for exchanging heat with a patient's spinal column incident to spinal surgery or to relieve a patient for a hypoxia condition of the spine. A closed loop heat exchange catheter is percutaneously advanced into the retroperitoneal space of the patient, and then heat exchange fluid is circulated through the catheter to cool the spinal column.

摘要: A combined occlusion/infusion catheter is placed in the aorta of a cardiac arrest patient to occlude the aorta at a location just above the renal arteries/celiac trunk while rapidly infusing a liter or more of cold saline into the aorta below the occlusion. This flushes white cells from the bowel (now placed into a state of hypothermic stasis) induces hypothermia in the whole body, with perfusion pressure of the cold fluid maximized to the brain.

摘要: Instead of immediately turning down a suspect credit card transaction, when a merchant store connects to a credit card issuer computer and the issuer computer realizes that the limit will be exceeded or that the transaction is otherwise suspect, it sends a voice or text phone message to the card holder summarizing the attempted transaction and asking the card holder to input a code if the card holder approves. If the card holder replies with the right code within a predetermined period the transaction is approved; otherwise, it is not.

摘要: A system for exchanging heat with primary coolant flowing through an intravascular catheter or externally-applied pad to warm or cool a patient. A secondary heat transfer element can be engaged with a primary heat transfer element and is not grounded when the primary heat transfer element is fully engaged with the secondary heat transfer element during operation. In contrast, the secondary heat transfer element is grounded when the primary heat transfer element is at a predetermined disengaged position relative to the secondary heat transfer element.
