A process for making highly mechanical and chemical resistant ceramic substrates, especially tiles is provided, wherein the process comprises coating said substrates with a base coat layer of a thermosetting or radiation curable powder coating composition, curing the applied powder coating composition, and applying a further layer of a liquid coating composition and curing the composition by exposure to heat. Coated ceramic substrates, in particular tiles are also provided.

The present invention relates to a powder coating composition for low temperature cure which comprises a mixture of a carboxylic acid group containing first polyester; at least one of a second polyester having a glass transition temperature ≦45° C. and/or a crystalline polycarboxylic acid; a glycidyl group containing acrylic copolymer; a further compound and/or resin having functional groups readable with the carboxylic acid groups; and a thermosetting curing catalyst. These thermosetting powder coatings are designed for coating heat-sensitive substrates such as wood, fibre board and other materials which can not withstand the excessive heat/time conditions necessary to cure traditional coatings. The powder coatings of the invention, when cured at temperatures below 150° C., produce a finish which exhibits a high gloss, smooth surface along with an outstanding hardness and weatherability.

The invention concerns powder thermosetting coating compositions comprising (a) an amorphous polyester containing carboxyl groups, rich in isophthalic acid and neopentylglycol, optionally branched with a polycarboxylic acid or a polyol containing at least three functional groups; (b) a semicrystalline polyester containing carboxyl groups prepared from one or several saturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acids with linear chain, and from a saturated aliphatic diol with linear or cyclic chain optionally branched with a polycarboxylic acid or with a polyol containing at least three functional groups, and having a melting point (Tm) of at least 40° C. and an acid value of 5 to 50 mg of KOH/g, and (c) a cross-linking agent. Said compositions are useful for preparing powder paints and varnishes providing excellent quality coatings whereof the brilliance, measured at an angle of 60°, according to the ASTM D 523 standard is always less than 50%, that is half-gloss or matt coatings.

The invention concerns a polyester bearing tertiary carboxyl groups, characterised in that it consists of: (a) 8.1 to 35 moles of an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic of a polyol; (b) 9.1 to 36 moles of an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic polycarboxylic acid; (c) 1.6 to 2.8 moles of an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic compound comprising a tertiary carboxyl group and either a primary or secondary carboxyl group, or a primary or secondary hydroxyl group. Said polyester is prepared in several steps, the first steps consisting in the preparation of a polyester by condensation between (a) an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic polyol, and (b) an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic polycarboxylic acid, the final step consisting in condensing said polyester with (c) an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic compound comprising a tertiary carboxyl group and either a primary or secondary carboxyl group, or a primary or secondary hydroxyl group. Said polyester is used in thermosetting powder compositions, mixed with a crosslinking agent which is more particularly a &bgr;-hydroxylalkylarnide. Said compositions provide coatings with excellent surface appearance, good flexibility and good resistance to poor weather conditions.
