A mutual solvent for use in oil and gas well operations comprising 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate and/or 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol diisobutyrate, a coupling solvent, and an acid stable surfactant. The coupling solvent is selected from ethylene glycol monobutyl ether; diethylene glycol monobutyl ether; propylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate; propylene glycol monomethyl ether; C1-C5 alkyl alcohol; and mixtures thereof. The invention also relates to an emulsion for use in oil and gas well operations comprising an aqueous acid or acid-salt brine solution and the mutual solvent as described above. An emulsion according to the invention is stable, non-toxic, and effectively removes asphaltenic and paraffinic hydrocarbons from drilling equipment and oil and gas wells.

The present invention relates to surfactantless latex compositions. More particularly, the present invention pertains to surfactantless latex compositions comprising sulfo-polyester polymers wherein the compositions have a continuous phase comprising water, diol, polyol or a mixture thereof. Still further, the present invention provides methods of making polymer blends comprising a condensation polymer and a latex polymer whereby the latex polymer is derived from a surfactantless latex composition comprising sulfo-polyester polymers. Polymer blends made by such methods are also provided.

The present invention describes a process for the direct preparation of methyl p-vinylbenzoate from methyl p-formylbenzoate using ketene in the presence of potassium acetate. The chief products obtained from the process are about a five to two ratio of methyl p-vinylbenzoate to p-carbomethoxycinnamic acid. The latter may be thermally decarboxylated, especially in the presence of copper powder, to produce additional quantities of methyl p-vinylbenzoate. Methyl p-vinylbenzoate may further undergo hydrolysis to form p-vinyl benzoic acid. Both methyl p-vinyl benzoate and p-vinyl benzoic acid may be polymerized with ethylenically unsaturated monomers to form useful latex compositions of the present invention.
