The present invention relates to a polymer dispersion, which comprises polymer particles dispersed in an aqueous continuous phase. The polymer particles are obtainable by a radical polymerisation of one or more vinyl monomers comprising alkyl (meth)acrylates. A rosin component is dissolved into at least one of the vinyl monomers before the radical polymerisation of the vinyl monomers, and the radical polymerisation is conducted in the presence of the rosin component. The invention relates also to the use of the polymer dispersion for surface sizing of a cellulosic fibre web and to a method for producing a polymer dispersion.

The present invention relates to a process for manufacturing a biopolymer chemically modified with a functional group selected from a carbon-carbon double bond, a carbon-carbon triple bond and a nitrogen-nitrogen triple bond, wherein following chemical modification in an aqueous solution, the biopolymer is precipitated in an organic solvent, filtered and dried, and the organic solvent is recovered by distillation. A biopolymer chemically modified with a functional group selected from a carbon-carbon double bond, a carbon-carbon triple bond and a nitrogen-nitrogen triple bond obtained by said manufacturing process, and a hydrogel thereof are also provided.

A peptide-crosslinked protein-imprinted polymer, preparation method, and application thereof. One method comprises: 1) dissolving a main monomer, functional monomers, a peptide crosslinking agent, and a template protein in an aqueous solution to obtain a mixed solution; 2) adding an initiator or initiator system to the mixed solution to initiate the polymerization when the peptide crosslinking agent exists in a helix conformation to obtain a polymer; 3) eluting the template protein when the peptide chain exists in a coil conformation to obtain a peptide-crosslinked protein-imprinted polymer. The peptide crosslinking agent is a peptide with a polymerizable double bond at its both ends, and being capable of undergoing helix-coil transition. The polypeptide crosslinking agent is a polypeptide having an amino acid sequence which has a polymerizable double bond at its both ends, being capable of undergoing a helix-coil conformational transformation. The polypeptide cross-linked protein molecule-imprinted polymer disclosed in the invention not only can completely remove the template protein under mild conditions, but also can significantly improve the imprint effect of the protein molecule-imprinted polymer.

Methods for conducting controlled grafting-from radical polymerizations from biomolecules under conditions that are biologically compatible are described. The methods provide biomolecule-polymer conjugates with highly controlled structures and narrow polydispersities under aqueous reaction conditions and biological temperatures. Biomolecules, such as proteins and nucleotides can be conjugated to polymers with high levels of control.

A thermogelling graft copolymer is provided. The copolymer is obtainable by (a) polymerizing, in a first step, an activated lignin-based polymer with N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) to form a lignin/poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) graft copolymer, and (b) polymerizing, in a second step, the lignin/poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) graft copolymer with a monomer mixture comprising (i) poly(ethylene glycol) (meth)acrylate and/or a C1-10 alkyl ether thereof, and (ii) poly(propylene glycol) (meth)acrylate and/or a C1-10 alkyl ether thereof, to obtain a lignin-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-block-poly(ethylene glycol)/poly(propylene glycol) graft copolymer. Method of preparing the thermogelling graft copolymer is also provided.

The core includes a base polymer, and the shell includes a polar polymeric stabilizing agent. One or more hydrophobic particulate fillers is embedded at least partially in the shell. Processes include: (1) selecting the base polymer; (2) selecting the stabilizing agent; (3) selecting the particulate filler(s); (4) melt-blending these, and contacting the melt-blend with water optionally with a neutralizing agent, thereby forming the coating composition including a dispersion. Coated articles include a substrate including cellulose and a dispersion on at least one surface of the substrate. Methods of making coated articles include: (1) providing a substrate including cellulose; (2) providing a coating composition including a dispersion; and (3) applying the coating composition to at least one surface of the substrate, thereby making the coated article.

Coating compositions are disclosed. In some embodiments, the coating compositions are used to coat substrates such as packaging materials and the like for the storage of food and beverages. The coating compositions can be prepared by reacting an epoxidized vegetable oil and a hydroxyl functional material in the presence of an acid catalyst to form a hydroxyl functional oil polyol, mixing the hydroxyl functional oil polyol (with or without epoxidized polybutadiene) and a functional polyolefin copolymer to form a mixture, reacting the mixture with an ethylenically unsaturated monomer component in the presence of an initiator to form a graft copolymer, and crosslinking the graft copolymer with a crosslinker to form the coating composition, wherein the graft copolymer or the crosslinked graft copolymer is inverted into water.
