    Abstract: Apparatus and methods for folding a nonwoven web without mechanical contact against a folding surface. A first portion of the nonwoven web is secured to a collector by vacuum and a positive pressure differential is applied to a second portion of the moving nonwoven web. An unbalanced lifting force applied by the positive pressure differential causes the first portion to fold along a longitudinal fold line extending in a machine direction and to assume an overlapping relationship with the second portion. The vacuum assists in the folding process and maintains the overlapping relationship until the nonbonded nonwoven web is consolidated. One or more elastic strands or bands may be captured in the space defined between the overlapped first and second portions.

    Abstract: A lamellar die apparatus for extruding a heated liquid into single or multiple component filaments. The apparatus includes a plurality of plates each having opposite side faces. At least two of the side faces confront each other and have a liquid passage positioned therebetween for transferring the heated liquid. At least two of the side faces confront each other and have a heating element passage therebetween. A heating element is positioned within the heating element passage for heating at least two of the plates. An extrusion die is coupled with the plurality of plates and communicates with the liquid passage for discharging the heated liquid as multiple filaments.

    Abstract: A die tip for use in meltblowing liquid material onto a moving substrate having a layer of entrained air moving in a common direction therewith. The die tip includes a base member having a plurality of liquid dispensing outlets for dispensing liquid material toward the substrate and a plurality of air discharge outlets for discharging air toward the liquid material dispensed from the liquid dispensing outlets. The base member includes at least one air deflecting member extending outwardly from the base member and toward the substrate. The air deflecting member is operable to deflect the moving entrained air in a direction away from the air discharge outlets of the meltblowing die tip. The air deflecting member substantially reduces the build up of dust and other debris carried in the entrained air around the air discharge outlets to maintain consistent and reliable operation of the meltblowing die tip.

    Abstract: A form fitting diaper comprises a backsheet having a front section, a back section, and a crotch section, and has bonded thereto an absorbent layer. The diaper further comprises a pair of elastic side panels bonded between the front and back sections of the backsheet and define therewith a circumferentially continuous and elastic waist, and further defining leg openings. The side panels having substantially unidirectional elasticity whereby the panels are elastic in the circumferential direction and substantially inelastic in the direction perpendicular thereto. The side panels being of composite construction comprising an elastomeric layer with a unidirectionally elastic nonwoven layer bonded thereto. The composite combines the barrier and strength properties of the elastomeric layer with the unidirectional elasticity and fabric-like properties of the nonwoven layer. The unidirectional elasticity of the composite is useful for putting on and taking off the diaper. The elastic nonwoven layer being formed by heat drawing substantially nonelastic meltblown or spunbond fibers.

    Abstract: Disclosed herein is an apparatus of the type for forming a nonwoven web from a fiber forming thermoplastic polymer resin which includes a reservoir for supplying a quantity of melted fiber forming thermoplastic resin, a pump for pumping the molten resin to a fiber forming die, and a die for forming a discrete resin stream to flow therefrom. The die includes a first fluid passageway for forming a stream of fluid, such as air, in contact with and substantially surrounding the formed flow of resin for a predetermined distance within the die and a fluid interrupt system for selectively cycling the flow of resin on and off and clearing the resin from the fiber forming die. A receiving belt collects the fibers formed from the resin flow beyond the first fluid passageway spaced at a predetermined distance from the die.
