In a component feeding unit, an opening provided in a suppressor for picking electronic components is formed in a size corresponding to electronic components stored in a storage tape of 16 mm pitch so as to employ storage tapes of four types, i.e., 4 mm pitch, 8 mm pitch, 12 mm pitch, and 16 mm pitch. The timer value is decremented at regular intervals. At regular intervals, the first memory is searched for an entry whose timer value is decremented to a predefined threshold and one of the local network nodes corresponding to this entry is polled to receive a response therefrom indicating an operating state of the polled node. The response is stored in the second memory. The network monitor transmits a polling signal to each router at the lowest level and receives the contents of the second memory.

In an ATM-LAN communication system, cell assembly disassembly (CLAD) units provide segmentation of a packet received from a LAN into payloads and assembling them into ATM cells, and disassembling received ATM cells into payloads and assembling them into a packet for transmission to the LAN. A connectionless switching function (CLSF) processor receives ATM cells either from an ATM switch and the CLAD units, and includes a database for storing address information of the received ATM cells and rotating the received ATM cells to the ATM switch and the CLAD units according to the address information of the database. The database has a destination address (DA) field, a VPI field and a VCI field. In response to an ATM cell, a source address, a VPI and a VCI contained in the cell are respectively stored into the DA, VPI and VCI fields of a database entry, and the database is searched for an entry having a DA field containing the source address of the received cell, a VPI field and a VCI field whose contents are different from the VPI and VCI of the received cell, and if such an entry is detected by the search, the VPI and VCI of the cell are rewritten with the different VPI and VCI to produce a transmit cell, and forwards the transmit cell to a destination. The database is further searched for an entry having a DA field containing the source address of the received cell. If the search fails to detect such an entry, the VPI and VCI of the cell are rewritten with broadcast VPI and VCI.

A cell assembly disassembly facility for interconnecting a local area network and an ATM switch includes an address table and a cell buffer for receiving ATM cells from the switch. A cell disassembler, connected to the cell buffer, disassembles the ATM cells into a packet for coupling to the LAN. The source address, VPI and VCI of each BOM (beginning-of-message) or SSM (single-segment-message) ATM cell in the cell buffer are stored into the DA, VPI and VCI fields of an entry of the table. Entries having identical source addresses (SA) are detected. If the same SA entries have different VPIs and VCIs, they are divided into at least two groups of entries. A majority decision is made on the entry groups to determine a winner. If one of the groups is determined to be a winner, the rest of the groups is erased and all the entries of the remaining group are then erased except for one entry. If there are two or more groups of largest number, all the entries of the groups are erased except for one that is most recently stored, or if at least one group of smaller number is present in addition to the groups of largest number, the smaller group is erased before erasing all entries other than the most recent one. When a packet is received by a packet buffer, the address table is searched for a DA field using the destination of the packet as a search key, and a VPI and a VCI are read from the entry of the DA field into each ATM cell that is sent to the ATM switch.
