A method and apparatus in which a Tap-Weight Computer (TWC) calculates a Tap-Weight Vector (TWV) are provided. The TWV is coupled to a register in an adaptive filter module. Each adaptive filter module includes several adaptive filters that each include a tapped delay line. The input to the tapped delay line is one of a plurality of potential interfering signals. The TWV controls the weighting of the outputs from the taps off the delay line. The weighted outputs from each tapped delay line are subtracted from a received signal which potentially includes interference from the potential interfering signals. The TWC is multiplexed to each of the plurality of adaptive filters so that each adaptive filter is loaded with a TWV calculated by the TWC to reduce the amount of interference contributed by a particular potential interfering signal coupled to an input to that particular adaptive filter.

The present invention provides an iterative method of allocating bandwidth in a twisted pair modem communication network in order to maximize communications speed while reducing NEXT interference. The method determines frequency bandwidths that cause NEXT interference and eliminates these harmful frequencies. In further embodiments, the invention adjusts other parameters of transmission such as decreasing bitloading rates and power within problematic frequency bandwidths, while increasing power and bitloading in the remaining frequencies. The methods provide an iterative process that ensures an appropriate signal to noise ratio and maximum data transfer.

Multiple channel communication devices utilize inter-channel crosstalk mitigation techniques, such as MIMO processing modules or MIMO precoding systems, to cancel unwanted crosstalk coupling across active and provisioned channels. Upon provisioning and activation of a new channel that connects to the multiple channel communication device the signal on the new channel couples into other channels and the existing MIMO filtering or processing structure is untrained to mitigate the crosstalk from the new channel. A power control training operation prevents crosstalk from hindering operation on other channels during the training operation. During one example training operation, the power level of a transmit signal is incrementally increased as the crosstalk cancellation filter(s) are trained.

In one embodiment a multi-channel communication system utilizes DMT processing and some form of encoding, such as block coding or convolutional coding. To recover the transmitted signal, processing in the receiver may comprise MIMO processing in conjunction with decoding. The MIMO processing may be configured with decision directed processing to thereby generate one or more cancellation signals based on isolated error terms. Decoding occurs on encoded signals after MIMO processing. Memory may be interspersed or available throughout the system to store incoming symbols that have not yet undergone decoding and MIMO processing. Decoding and MIMO processing may occur sequentially through the channels.

In one embodiment a multichannel communication system utilizes DMT processing to transmit two or more signals over two or more channels. To recover the transmitted signal, processing in the receiver may comprise submitting the two or more signals to a matrix filter configured to cancel the effects of the channel, such as phase and magnitude distortion, and account for self FEXT. In addition, decision directed processing may occur, generating one or more cancellation signals based on the noise on the output of the matrix filter. By filtering the noise terms and generating a crosstalk compensation signal, the transmitted signal is recovered more faithfully and the performance of the communication system is improved.
