Abstract: The present invention relates to a mechanical system and method that modulates airflow in an aircraft inlet diffuser that is used in conjunction with an aircraft engine that integrates both a center turbine engine and a high Mach engine such as a constant volume combustor (CVC) arrangement or ramjet arrangement with intakes formed co-centrically about the turbine. The modulation system uses two articulating components, a movable air flow duct and an articulating cone. The air flow duct, in a first position, is in exclusive air flow communication with the circular intake face of the turbine in a first position to receive air from the intake diffuser. In this configuration the expandable cone is in a retracted position and does not redirect airflow and allows the aircraft to operates in low speed mode as only the turbo jet receives airflow. In a transition speed mode, the air flow duct is retracted to allow air flow to both the turbo jet and the CVC. At its widest expanse, the articulating cone completely covers the turbo jet circular intake face directing air solely to the high Mach aircraft engine to allow the aircraft to operate in high speed mode.

Abstract: A sandwich panel includes a honeycomb core of a plurality of cells. A first skin is adhered to a first surface of the honeycomb core with an adhesive. A second skin is adhered to a second surface of the honeycomb core with the adhesive. The plurality of cells extend longitudinally between the first and second skins. The first and second skins adhere to the honeycomb core to form a sandwich panel having a surface area of at least 2.25 square feet. A foam fill is disposed within the cells of the honeycomb core. The foam fill and the honeycomb core define a first gap region proximate to the first skin and a second gap region proximate to the second skin.

Abstract: Methods of forming shaped adhesive fillets are disclosed. The adhesive fillets may be made by stacking multiple layers of adhesive sheets, consolidating the stacked layers, cutting strips from the consolidated layers, and forming the strips into adhesive fillets having desired cross sectional shapes. The fillets may be formed by feeding the strips through an apparatus comprising opposing rollers and a catcher, which facilitates release of the adhesive fillets from the rollers. The formed adhesive fillets are useful for applications such as stiffened panels for aircraft.

Abstract: The present invention includes a method for analyzing an image to screen for target candidates wherein an edge-follower detects straight segments within a plurality of longer edges and detects also from the longer edges, contours that go around areas that are the right size. The invention also contemplates starting the edge-follower from seeds on the image and terminating the edge-following process if the edge meanders too much to ever become an acceptable contour. In accordance with another embodiment, the straight segments can be further screened by measuring the gradient direction and then noting the deviation from the mean of those direction values. The highly straight edges thus found, in confluence with each other, or near a correct size contour define likely candidates.

Abstract: Synchronizing subsystems includes receiving an objective and constraints at a timing module from a processor. The constraints describe subsystems that include at least one sensor. An objective function is determined in response to the objective. The objective function includes a function of time variables, where a time variable is associated with a subsystem. The objective function is optimized in accordance with the constraints to determine a time value for each time variable, and the subsystems are synchronized according to the time values. Data is received from the synchronized subsystems at the processor, and an image is generated from the data.

Abstract: A method and an apparatus for collating a plurality of groups of mail items, such as flats mail, each group being pre-sequenced according to prioritized delivery addresses, into a final sequenced set of the mail items from the groups, utilizing the prioritized delivery addresses. Each bundle of mail items is formed into a single input stream of the individual mail items. The mail items are transported along a conveyor system from the input stream to a staging station. The mail items are sorted at the staging station into a plurality of subsets of mail items re-sequenced as an intermediate step to achieving the final sequenced sets. The mail items are then collated and merged into a single output stream from the respective subsets of mail items in the final sequenced set. Portions of the output stream from the staging station are collected in batches which maintain the sequence consistent with the prioritized delivery order sequence of the mail for a given carrier route.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for fabricating composite structures are disclosed. A method for fabricating composite structures is provided that includes providing a skin (20) that has at least one layer (160) of uncured composite material, and providing a flexible hinge tool (100) that has first and second tooling portions (110, 120) coupled with a flexible hinge (140). The first and second tooling portions (110, 120) of the hinge tool (100) each have a molding surface (112, 122), and the tooling portions (110, 120) are configured to form at least a portion of a stiffening member (10). The method further includes laying up at least one layer (160) of uncured composite material on the molding surfaces (112, 122) to form the stiffening member (10). Furthermore, the flexible hinge tool (100) is positioned on the skin (20) such that the uncured composite material laid up on the first tooling portion (110) of the hinge tool (100) contacts the skin (20), and such that the uncured composite material on the second tooling portion (120) extends from the skin (20) to form an upstanding segment (14) of the stiffening member (10). The skin (20) and the uncured composite material on the flexible hinge tool (100) are simultaneously cured to form a stiffened composite structure. The method also includes the step of removing the flexible hinge tool (100) by bending the tool (100) at the flexible hinge (140) such that the first portion (110) of the tool (100) peels away from the skin (20), and such that the second portion (120) of the tool (100) peels away from the upstanding segment (14) of the stiffening member (10). An apparatus (100) for fabricating composite structures is provided that includes first and second tooling portions (110, 120) that are configured to support at least one layer (160) of composite materials during curing to form a composite structure. The apparatus (100) further includes a flexible hinge (140) that is disposed between and couples the first and second tooling portions (110, 120). The flexible hinge (140) couples the tooling portions (110, 120) such that they may be peeled away from the composite material after curing by bending the apparatus (100) at the flexible hinge (140).

Abstract: Provided is a method of forming a thru-hole through a composite structure having a plurality of internal compartments. An insert ring is connected to the composite structure to create a protective layer around the periphery of a penetration formed within the composite structure. An adhesive is disposed between the composite structure and the insert ring to create a fluid-tight seal between the insert ring and the internal compartments. In this regard, the fluid-tight seal mitigates fluid flow between the internal compartments.
