Abstract:
The present invention is directed to a process for switching the mating type of a Yarrowia fungus strain into an opposite mating type, and to the use thereof to sexually cross two individual strains resulting in new strains.
Abstract:
A method and system for micro-force guided cooperative control that assists the operator in manipulating tissue in the direction of least resistance. A tool holder receives a surgical tool adapted to be held by a robot and a surgeon. A first sensor measures interaction forces between a tip of the surgical tool and tissue of a region of interest. A second sensor measures interaction forces between the surgeon and a handle to the surgical tool. A data processor is configured to perform an algorithm to actively guide the surgical tool by creating a bias towards a path of least resistance and limit directional tool forces of the surgical tool as a function of handle input forces and tip forces. This function offers assistance to challenging retinal membrane peeling procedures that require a surgeon to delicately delaminate fragile tissue that is susceptible to hemorrhage and tearing due to undesirable forces.
Abstract:
In software engineering, the performance or efficiency of individual process steps is typically defined as some sort of rate such as the number of detected defects divided by the effort spent for review or testing. In this situation, the variation in the data always reflects a mixture of intrinsic process variation caused by, for example, human factors such as the experience of reviewers or the variable quality of the review objects, and purely statistical variation due to the effects of Poisson statistics when defects are counted. Due to this mixture of causes of variation no conventional statistical process control chart holds for the constraints of typical software engineering processes. A new statistical process control (SPC) approach (method and system) is presented to overcome the mentioned problems.
Abstract:
A safety razor for wet shaving having two sets of blades cutting with opposite shaving stroke directions. This permits more efficient and effective shaving than with razors having blades that cut with strokes in one direction only.
Abstract:
A method for replacing a first sample carried on a moving secondary conveyor onto a moving primary conveyor at a potential interference point while the primary conveyor is transporting a second sample
Abstract:
A method for mitigating stress corrosion cracking of a component exposed to a high temperature water in a high temperature water system is provided. The method comprises the steps of lowering corrosion potential conditions to a desired low corrosion potential in the high temperature water environment; and introducing a first material comprising zinc into the high temperature water environment, such that the desired low corrosion potential facilitates transport of the first material into cracks in a structure communicative with the high temperature water environment.
Abstract:
A cup-like broth container comprising four mutually opposed pairs of connected sidewalls with a protruding rib formed on each of four perpendicularly opposed single sidewalls and four Y-shaped clamping ridges attached to and extending outwardly from a single one of the four sidewalls located between the four sidewalls having a protruding rib.
Abstract:
A method and system for reducing stress corrosion cracking in a hot water system, such as a nuclear reactor, by reducing the electrochemical corrosion potential of components exposed to high temperature water within the structure. The method includes the steps of: providing a reducing species to the high temperature water; and providing a plurality of noble metal nanoparticles having a mean particle size of up to about 100 nm to the high temperature water during operation of the hot water system. The catalytic nanoparticles, which may contain at least one noble metal, form a colloidal suspension in the high temperature water and provide a catalytic surface on which a reducing species reacts with least one oxidizing species present in the high temperature water. The concentration of the oxidizing species is reduced by reaction with the reducing species on the catalytic surface, thereby reducing the electrochemical corrosion potential of the component.
Abstract:
A microbiological test array with a generally flat base having a plurality of upwardly projecting microwells connected by a microchannel to an open reservoir formed in a top surface generally parallel to the base of the test array. The reservoir has an opening to permit an inoculum-broth liquid solution to flow from the reservoir through the microchannel, to a sacrificial evaporation well having an air vent port adapted to control a vacuum filling process, and subsequently to be distributed into each of the plurality of microwells.
Abstract:
Mixing a liquid solution in a container by rotating a pair of bar-shaped magnets in a coordinated pattern in which lines parallel to the axes of the bar-shaped magnets remain normal to one another, the magnets disposed in close proximity to and on opposite sides of the container a distance above the bottom of the container so that a magnetic mixing member is caused to rotate in the liquid about the same distance above the bottom of the container. Relative vertical movement of the magnets and the container generates a vortex-like mixing action throughout the container.
