The present invention relates to compositions containing a polycarbonate including a bisphenol compound and an effective amount of a bishaloformate component present in an amount sufficient to reduce the average unbound bisphenol compound level found in water after immersion in deionized water for two weeks at 40° C. of the composition to less than about 20 ppb. Also provided are methods for increasing the water resistance of a polycarbonate composition. The method involves adding an effective amount of a bishaloformate component to the polycarbonate composition such that the polycarbonate composition has an average unbound bisphenol compound level found in water after immersion in deionized water for two weeks at 40° C. of less than about 20 ppb.

A compatible blend of polycarbonate resin with a vinyl (co)polymer blending partner is disclosed. The preparation of inventive blend comprise reactive blending of polycarbonate, a vinyl (co)polymer and a novel compatibilizer in the presence of a transesterification catalyst and under conditions of time and temperature designed to promote transesterification. The compatibilizer is the polymerized reaction product of at least one vinyl monomer that contains no hydroxy groups and a hydroxyl containing monomer conforming to (I) where R denotes H or C1–C4 alkyl, R1 denotes H, Cl, Br, C1–C4 alkyl, cyclohexyl, or C1–C4 alkoxy, a is 0 or 1, b is 0 or 1, c is 0 or 1, n is an integer of 0 to 4 and X is an OH group. The compatible blends of the invention are characterized by their improved properties.

The molding composition that comprise A) branched, aromatic poly(ester)carbonate, B) graft polymer, C) an optional vinyl(co)polymer and or polyalkylene terephthalate, D) at least one flame retarding phosphorous compound selected from the group consisting of mono- and oligomeric phosphorus and phosphonic acid esters, phosphonate amines and phosphazenes and E) talc, is characterized in that its flexural modulus at room temperature is at least 3000 N/mm2 and that its falling dart energy at break, at −30° C., is at least 40.0 J. Sheets extruded of the composition are suitable for making useful articles by thermoforming.
